Vice President, Development

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Vice President of Development in our Midwest Region office located in Cleveland, Ohio . The Vice President will plan, organize, staff, and direct the entire operation of the corporate events, in the metro Cleveland market.

The Vice President of Development is responsible and accountable for recruitment, training, campaign goal and management activities to ensure efficient growth and development for the market’s corporate development efforts. This includes coaching and supervising assigned staff and collaborating with corporate and community leaders to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of fundraising efforts.

The Vice President of Development will work under the Executive Director and collaborate closely with the Directors of Community Impact and Communications to provide vision and direction for the market’s unified health and revenue efforts. Will oversee all development staff in the market. #LI-CS1

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Guides and directs team to achieve event and revenue goals. Ensure that assigned market is successful in achieving the annual campaign goal of approximately $3.1M+ million.
  • Accountable for hiring, directing, training, evaluating and terminating staff under his/her supervision.
  • Develops, monitors, and evaluates an annual working plan with dollar and volunteer recruitment goals, budget and timelines for the events. Develop contingency plans, as needed to successfully complete fundraising activities. Assumes bottom line responsibility for metro area event income goals.
  • Develops relationship-building strategies to include making personal visits on a monthly and quarterly basis. Secures sponsorships and campaign participation.
  • Responsible for staff follow-up and monitoring of assigned fundraising activities.
  • Ensures that divisions and activities function within the parameters of American Heart Association and Midwest Affiliate policy.
  • Lead and manage the corporate development team including recruitment and selection, performance management and development, and succession planning.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team, provide vision and direction for the assigned market’s unified health and revenue efforts. Oversee implementation of plans and strategy as appropriate.
  • Recruit and engage medical and non-medical volunteer leadership in partnership with the Cleveland Metro team.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate an integrated approach to strategically-aligned community health and development planning consistent with market, region and association-wide goals.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s or some college plus experience. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university preferred. College coursework combined with related experience may be substituted for a degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 4+years of experience in outside sales or related fundraising. This experience may also count towards satisfying this position’s educational requirement.
  • Related experience may be substituted as follows: 1 ½ years’ experience equates to 1 full-time year of higher education.
  • 4+ years of experience in working with and managing high-level volunteers preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in staff management. Experience managing fundraising staff preferred. Experience gained through direct internal work on AHA projects/priorities may substitute for this requirement and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking skills in assessing the local market environment and available resources to successfully implement new and existing programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to productively participate in a multi-disciplinary team environment working toward common goals with internal and external clients. Ability to influence team members without supervisory authority.
  • Ability to do daily and overnight travel as needed.
  • Must have at least basic knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office 2010 or higher used for word processing, email, presentations, and spreadsheets. Advanced knowledge and skill with these programs is preferred. These skills are subject to testing.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds with the expectation that items in excess of 20 pounds would be broken down into smaller components or additional assistance is required before lifting and/or moving.
