The Director, Direct Marketing oversees the development, execution, and analysis of the organization’s offline direct response fundraising strategy across direct mail, telemarketing, alternative media and other DR channels to increase and maintain the core donor base needed to meet long-term revenue objectives.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Lead development and execution of a direct response fundraising program to acquire, retain, upgrade and steward donors to support the organization and increase operating budget. Develop comprehensive offline fundraising revenue target, define measurement plan, and report outcomes as needed.
- Direct acquisition strategy to drive new donor relationships. Ensure strong balance of upfront and long term value of new donors.
- Direct donor cultivation/renewal program to drive donor retention to meet unrestricted revenue goals.
- Lead the development and management of the direct marketing revenue and expense budget to support all offline direct response fundraising needs for creative, lists/models, production, postage and measurement.
- Manage direct report(s) focusing on goal setting and accountability to achieve desired outcomes.
- Collaborate closely with the SVP, Direct Marketing & Digital Engagement; Director, Digital Fundraising, and MarCom team leadership to support departmental strategy; providing support and guidance to team to cultivate talent.
- Collaborate closely with Digital Fundraising and Digital Engagement leadership and agency of record to integrate marketing and fundraising campaigns across channels, etc.
- Collaborate closely with Director, Direct Marketing & Digital Engagement Operations and production agency to optimize productivity and steward financial resources efficiently, includes primary oversight of direct marketing fundraising agency of record.
- Lead consumer-facing direct response fundraising priorities for the organization to support executive decision-making.
- Identify and asses emerging direct marketing and media trends and opportunities to reach new and existing donor audiences.
- and work plan and manages regular performance metrics on direct mail programs, monitoring benchmarks within non-profit industry.
- Supervises Director, Donor Cultivation in the recommendation of strategies for cultivating mid-level donors into Major Gift prospects and growing the sustainer program; partnering with Digital Engagement team to integrate cross channel strategies and communications and ensure a consistent donor experience and optimal revenue.
- Provides leadership and career development opportunities for the Direct Marketing team. Collaborates with CMO and VP, Digital Engagement, and Director of Brand Marketing on developing effective team and department structure.
- Collaborates with Philanthropy Operations team to ensure effective management and utilization of data to support the donor experience and program performance measurement.
- Drives reporting needs for acquisition and cultivation performance metrics; works with the philanthropy team to meet revenue and expense projections.
- Oversee and assess all direct marketing vendor relationships and contracts including InTHD (offline agency of record), PMX (list broker) and other supporting media agencies. Support team members to effectively manage agencies to provide optimal service to organization.
- Oversee Sr. Specialist/Manager to supervise list management vendor; maximize list revenue and appropriately leverage exchange opportunities to reduce acquisition costs.
- Identifies and assesses emerging direct marketing and donor trends.
Educational Background:
BA/BS or related experience
Skills/Experience:
- 10+ years’ professional experience in direct mail, direct mail fundraising and/or direct response, marketing or fund development with increasing responsibility.
- 5+ years’ experience with direct response acquisition with both offline and digital media. 8 years leadership experience.
- Demonstrated success in budget planning and management.
- Experience managing staff and leading cross department work teams.
- Strong experience with direct response analytics and database segmentation.
- Experience in developing creative campaigns and direct marketing offers which inspire action.
- Excellent abilities in applying principals of fundraising and knowledge of giving trends, direct response performance metrics and technologies.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
