The Managing Director for Community Health and Nutrition (CHN) manages a team focused on improving nutrition and health outcomes in alignment with Feeding America’s 2025 goals: to ensure increased access to nutritious food and improved diet quality for the people we serve. The Managing Director is a member of the Impact Leadership Team and reports to the Chief Impact Officer.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage a team of professional staff and program budgets to support strategy goals related to dietary intake, health, and food security.
  • Work across the organization and network, and engage leading experts in the field, to ensure that Feeding America’s work to feed, nourish, and empower our clients is informed by the best thinking and research in the CHN field.
  • Develop external partnerships and manage critical relationships to advance Feeding America’s CHN goals while working closely with key departments across Feeding America, including Research, Government Relations, Communications, and Development to advance the CHN strategy.
  • Identify and develop opportunities to partner effectively with health care organizations, including payors and providers, to advance Feeding America’s strategic objectives in the area of health and nutrition.
  • Advocate for financial and in-kind resources to that support the national office and network members in better achieving our CHN goals.
  • Work with Feeding America’s network and other nonprofit, government and for-profit organizations to provide strategic guidance and technical assistance in nutrition, health care and public health to advance Feeding America’s 2025 strategic directions.
  • Support work to identify best practices and to strengthen the evidence base for improving diet quality and health among the food insecure and to replicate programs and approaches across the Feeding America network.
  • Collaborate with the Research team on the development and implementation of evaluation plans to track the impact of our work and allow for continuous learning. Maximize knowledge from grants, research, and initiatives that can improve our impact.
  • Partner with Feeding America’s Government Relations team to identify barriers and opportunities that can be addressed through public policy to advance the strategy goals.
  • Strengthen team culture by attracting, developing, coaching, and retaining high-performance team members.
  • Represent Feeding America at internal and external conferences, briefings, meetings and events.  
  • Serve as staff liaison to task forces, committees, and other projects as assigned by Chief Impact Officer.
  • Actively engage as a member of the Chief Impact Officer’s leadership team.
  • Complete special projects as assigned by the Chief Impact Officer.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS or equivalent experience. Advanced degree in public health and/or health policy preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10+ years of management experience in public health and nutrition or related fields. Experience managing a remote team preferred.
  • Demonstrated success at designing, evaluating and/or implementing program interventions to achieve health and nutritional goals at scale.
  • Operational or business understanding of health care systems and delivery with capacity to deeply engage partners in the health care sector.
  • Solid understanding of the ways in which greater nutrition awareness is reshaping food systems and food industry policies and practices and implications for Feeding America’s work.
  • Proven knowledge of factors which influence health across the lifespan, including the social determinants of health, and the overall impact on health outcomes of individuals and populations served.
  • Commitment to advance health equity to achieve improved health outcomes for all.
  • Strong analytic skills, able to prioritize across projects to advance a complex set of strategic objectives.
  • Strong written skills (e.g., briefing notes on technical topics, proposals, letters of intent, etc.).
  • Strong negotiation and relationship skills.
  • Demonstrated fundraising and stakeholder management experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders, including advisory groups, coalitions, forums, foundations, corporate sponsors, academic partners, and practitioner groups.
  • Track record of effectively developing and operationalizing strategies that have taken a program or organization to the next stage of growth.
  • Ability to generate respect and trust from staff and independent affiliates, while fostering an environment that promotes collaboration, learning, innovation and a commitment to excellence.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing toward results.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking with the ability to assimilate various data points and perspectives in making strategic recommendations and decisions.
  • Up to 30% travel will be required with about 1 week per month in Washington DC or Chicago.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications and ability to learn new technological applications.
