The Strategic Portfolio Manager supports execution of Feeding America’s multiyear strategic plan by building best-in-class project and program management capabilities. This individual manages Feeding America’s stage-gate Project Development Process, providing project management expertise and creating tools to support Feeding America teams in using the process and developing projects with consistent rigor. This individual also maintains and provides visibility into the portfolio of initiatives and projects underway across Feeding America to support key enterprise processes including annual planning, stewardship, and reporting. This position reports to the Managing Director, Strategic Planning and is based in Chicago.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages and serves as main point of contact for stage-gate Project Development Process, including tracking status of strategic projects in the pipeline and preparing agendas for gate-review meetings.
  • Develops and executes communication plan to support teams in understanding and using the Project Development Process.
  • Provides project management and business case expertise and develops tools, templates, and trainings to support teams in managing project execution and preparing for gate reviews.
  • Regularly engages stakeholders across departments to co-create and drive adoption of process and associated tools.
  • Supports development of project timelines, drives project and action item completion, and helps ensure that activities represent value added deliverables.
  • Provides support to project teams and departments to promote collaboration and issue resolution.
  • As needed, provides leadership for / manages high-impact, cross-functional projects.
  • Develops and manages portfolio management approach and tool in collaboration with Finance, Development, and other departments that supports visibility into alignment of activities to organizational goals, stewardship status, resource allocation, and planning.
  • Identifies areas for process improvement and proactively develops and recommends solutions; collaborates with and supports various Feeding America functions (Finance, Data & Analytics, IT, Member Grants, Development) to build enhanced systems and processes for budgeting and reporting to complement portfolio management.
  • Supports Managing Director, Strategic Planning to evaluate the portfolio and pipeline to identify cross-cutting business needs, risks, and opportunities to drive greater collaboration to advance organizational goals.
  • Supports creating effective narratives and reports about portfolio and pipeline status and performance for organizational performance dashboard and key stakeholder meetings (e.g., network Members, Executive Team, Board of Directors).
  • Supports facilitating structured reviews of portfolio and pipeline, including scheduling, agenda development, notes, and follow up.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS required or relevant work experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5+ years of increasingly responsible positions in strategic planning, finance, project / program management, or other relevant field
  • Advanced degree preferred

  • Strategic thinker with ability to see the big picture and understand the perspective of multiple functions, including how decisions affect the long-term and short-term outcomes of projects
  • Handles confidential matters and sensitive information or situations with discretion
  • Advanced data management and analysis skills
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office applications.
