Manage the food bank network food safety capacity by promoting a national culture of food safety, providing support and resources to achieve and sustain food safety compliance.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Applies food safety technical acumen to practical food banking network processes.
  • Promotes and educates the Food Bank Network on the Food Safety Standards that are part of the member contract (e.g., conferences, Feeding America University (FAU) courses).
  • Creates & manages training and networking opportunities for the implementation of the Food Safety Standard in the Network.
  • Provides technical assistance and to support to Food Bank Network members.
  • Develops, maintains, and enhances external relationships with appropriate food safety and public health organizations.
  • Monitors food safety information released by FDA, USDA, and AFDO in relation to the work of the Food Bank Network.
  • Serves as a trainer and resource to internal staff on the issue of food safety.
  • Regularly reviews and updates the existing Food Safety and Handling Manual and other technical assistance documents to be made available to the Food Bank Network.
  • Supports the Food Bank Network to implement food safety and HACCP plans when required.
  • Manages the 3rd party (AIB) audit program.
  • Advises and supports field directors with food safety compliance issues.
  • Lead the food safety session for the Feeding America Feed Nourish and Connect Conference.
  • Manage daily recall process to ensure the Network is kept apprised of USDA and FDA recalls.
  • Supports and advises staff and the Food Bank Network during food safety crisis.
  • Manages the content on the Food Safety Hungernet (intranet) pages and continue to keep the content relevant.
  • Keep the national office and the Food Bank Network appraised of the relevance and effect of the Food Safety Modernization Act on our business; monitor how the new laws may impact our business.
  • Manage logistics for the Feeding America Food Safety Trainings.
  • Travel to provide technical support to member food banks; travel accounts for approximately 25% of the role.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS or relevant experience
Food Science or Microbiology preferred
Food Safety CertificationHACCP Certification desirable
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years’ experience in food safety education
  • 3-5 years’ experience in food safety crisis management
  • 3-5 years’ experience working with legal and regulatory bodies and recall processes

Required Technical Competencies and Experience

  • Excellent oral and written presentation, communication, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to attend to detail, focus on service and willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated program implementation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
