Director, Major Gifts

Responsible for development and management of a major gifts portfolio concentrating on the Chicago area.  Qualified candidates will have multiple years of experience with securing major gifts of $50k+ in the Chicagoland market using the six-step moves management process: identification, qualification & planning, cultivation, solicitation, negotiation & close, and stewardship.  Preferred candidates will have multiple years of experience working in healthcare or public health fields in Chicago.  Qualified candidates will have multiple years of experience working with individuals and philanthropic families, private foundations, and fundraising volunteers toward qualifying and building a caseload of donors.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage a portfolio of 125 -150 donors.  Create and execute a moves management plan for each qualified donor in the portfolio.
  • Conduct a minimum of 200 visits with major gift prospects annually.
  • Submit a minimum of 24 solicitations of individuals, families or foundations through active management of a balanced portfolio.
  • Secure a minimum of $750,000 in major gifts in first year.
  • Coordinate and take responsibility for stewardship of $10k+ donors in the Chicago area, and execute stewardship in partnership with stewardship advisor.
  • Work with Chicago area leadership, program, and communications team to secure appropriate project information. Including budgets and program content, to create proposals and execute solicitations.
  • Support the effective development of campaign packaging, naming gift pricing, and lead gift development.
  • Work closely with the distinguished events team to develop and implement donor cultivation, engagement, and recognition events as a coordinated strategy of the six-step moves management donor development process, and execute timely and strategic audience follow-up.
  • Collaborate closely with planned giving, corporate relations, cancer control, communications/marketing and ACS CAN colleagues to ensure coordinated and interdependent strategies and regional goal achievement.
  • Maintain productive and collaborative relationships with the Society’s global headquarters and regional teams; participate on regional and enterprise projects and committees as appropriate.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and a 5+ year proven track record of securing $100,000+ gifts or equivalent experience.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, as is computer proficiency.
  • Successful track record of securing 6, 7, and 8 figure gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • Strong working knowledge of the major gifts area; sales management and campaign experience is highly desirables.
  • Established ability to build and cultivate relationships with individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • Ability to establish collegial, effective working relationships and partner with staff and volunteers.
  • Strong financial acumen.
  • Ability to drive lead generation for individual and corporate major giving opportunities.
  • The ability to be an ambassador for the American Cancer Society.
  • Ability to understand work within a complex organizational structure.Experience with planned giving software is preferred.  
  • Some travel will be required.
