Director, Economic Mobility

In alignment with Feeding America’s 2025 goal, the Director, Economic Mobility supports programs, policies and partnerships designed to improve financial well-being and long-term food security for households facing hunger. The Director will work closely with the Ending Hunger Community of Practice, comprised of food banks and state associations, as well as with external experts, partners, and colleagues across the organization to ensure our efforts are informed by food bank experience and current research. The Director is a member of the Programs Leadership Team and reports to the Vice President, Food Security.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Provide leadership on this portfolio internally and externally:

  • Provide counsel to the Vice President, Food Security and organizational leaders on successes and barriers faced in achieving outcomes related to this work.
  • Represent Feeding America at internal and external events.
  • Represent the team to Feeding America initiatives and work groups as assigned by the VP, Food Security.
  • Lead and manage special projects as assigned.

Support organizational efforts to build the evidence base and expand promising and proven approaches that promote the financial well-being and long-term food security of the people we serve:

  • Engage Feeding America network members in generating ideas, co-creating solutions, testing/evaluating models, sharing learnings, and expanding successful approaches.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to collaborate with external entities that can support our strategic objectives, including with subject matter experts, researchers and partner organizations.
  • Ensure information is distributed in a timely, transparent manner that supports learning across the network and other collaborators and accelerates our ability to increase outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Research Team to develop and implement evaluation plans and efforts to leverage external research.
  • Partner with the Government Relations Team to identify barriers and opportunities that can be addressed through public policy and advocacy to advance the strategy goals.

  • Attract, develop, and retain a high-performing team, modeling and promoting a culture characterized by outcomes-orientation and continuous learning.
  • Strengthen systems, processes, and tools to support the planning and implementation of this portfolio, including project management and budget management.
  • In partnership with the Resource Development Team, advocate for financial and in-kind resources that support the national office and network members in achieving our shared goals.
  • Oversee team’s engagement with the Marketing and Communications Team to ensure appropriate communication with internal and external audiences.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS or relevant experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 8+ years’ experience in nonprofit program development with 5+ years in management required

  • Communicates Effectively – Ability to communicate across a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, including presenting at conferences, meetings and events through both written materials and presentations
  • Collaborates Internally and Externally – Ability to collaborate across a variety of internal departments including development, member grants, finance, etc. as well as partner and engage with the network and a wide range of external partnerships and stakeholders.

Required Technical Competencies and Experience

  • Proven track record of working in partnership with a diversity of programmatic partners, community groups, and advisors, including experience with participatory program development and implementation, and group facilitation methods.
  • Demonstratable success in effectively developing, operationalizing, and growing new strategies.
  • Experience with or subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas a plus: food banking, client engagement, community engagement processes, racial equity, workforce development, financial stability, case management, evaluation.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically as part of a team and within broad groups.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing toward results.
  • Highly capable problem solver, able to work on complex problems requiring strong analytical and process skills.
  • Strong analytic skills, able to prioritize across projects to advance a complex set of strategic objectives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to adjust tone, length, and style of communication as needed.
  • Experience managing a remote team preferred.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications and ability to learn new technological applications.
  • Up to 20% travel may be required.
