Communication Manager - Media Relations

Contributes to the success of Feeding America’s proactive communication strategies, including managing the organization’s thought-leadership efforts, promoting the leadership of its executives and subject matter experts, and fostering engagement and publicizing issues relating to hunger in America as part of the organization’s national media relations strategy in coordination with network food banks across the country. Participates in all aspects of Feeding America’s external relations efforts, including communicating with press.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Supports the Director of Communications, Consumer Media, with media outreach for the organization’s national consumer media strategy, from story ideation to media placement.
  • Manages the organization’s thought-leadership communications strategies, collaborating with research and programs teams, to support organizational objectives while maintaining and increasing the organization’s awareness among key constituencies, including mass and trade media, grass-top influencers, and potential new donors.
  • Works with senior management to identify topics of interest for keynote, panel and session speakers at major association, education, government meetings and issue-oriented conferences.
  • Develops briefing materials for executive subject matter experts for thought-leadership-related activities and media events.  
  • Drafts and edits communication materials including media statements, topline messages, issue backgrounders, fact sheets, speeches/presentations, press releases, media pitches, editorial pieces, social media content and other communication materials for various targeted audiences.
  • Collaborates with teammates, government relations team, and network member communicators on consumer or mass media story development, local advocacy strategies and issues management, as needed.
  • Manages media monitoring and analysis, including the creation of reports related to Feeding America campaigns as well as composing weekly e-newsletter.
  • Works in partnership with the Advocacy team on the social media strategy for specific channels and target audiences.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS or relevant experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5+ years media relations experience in a major human service organization, public relations firm, government role or major corporation

  • Leverages Functional Expertise – Ability to leverage strong functional knowledge in the areas of media and media strategy, writing, project management, senior executive communication support and communications planning.
  • Collaborates Internally and Externally – Ability to collaborate across a variety of internal departments as well as partner and engage with a wide range of external stakeholders, including media companies, food banks, associations, government, forums, donors, etc..
  • Manages for Results – Works to apply a variety of project management techniques to advance media and communication goals and coordinate between senior executives and external organizations
  • Translates Strategy to Operational Goals – Ability to take defined media strategies and develop communication plans to advance our efforts and initiatives.

Required Technical Competencies and Experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, knowledge of AP Style, specifically for interacting with the media, donors, the general public, network members, community groups and senior management, and as evidenced by a strong track record of placed stories, op-ed columns, features, etc.
  • Proven ability to manage media interviews for senior executives, including television, radio, print and online media.
  • Strong news sense and proficiency in the use of media clipping services (Meltwater), PR Newswire, and emerging trends.
  • Personal leadership skills and the ability to as part of a team and independently; strong project management skills and a customer-service focus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
