Vice President, Advocacy, Central Region

The VP, Regional Advocacy leads a comprehensive public policy advocacy program and represents ACS CAN in the region including managing personnel; overseeing campaign implementation; organizational fundraising and ensuring integration and alignment with ACS as well as related resources and activities.  The position reports to the Senior Vice President State and Local Advocacy.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Direct ACS CAN work in region through developing and managing a comprehensive multi-state public policy advocacy program and organizational development plan for the region that includes fundraising and grassroots engagement.
  • Brings strategic mindset while serving on ACS Regional Senior Leadership Teams and ensures excellent communication and implementation of ACS CAN priorities including integrating ACS CAN fundraising into regional planning and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
  • Build effective team including managing state and local advocacy personnel in the region (approximately 40 staff). Drive engagement for staff, attract and develop talent and ensure accountability for outcomes.
  • Responsible for ensuring execution of ACS CAN fundraising and development activities in region.
  • Builds networks and manages relationships with key ACS CAN partners; specifically working with the regional staff of these partners
  • Collaborates with ACS CAN leaders to develop organizational plans and budget for the region, monitors and oversees plan and budget, and communicates effectively on outcomes, troubleshoots issues.
  • Works closely with State and Local Advocacy team leaders and in coordination with ACS CAN Leaders of functional areas Senior Vice President, state and local advocacy; to ensure strategic and technical support for regional field activities; including local; state and federal campaigns assistance; volunteer support and training; program integration into ACS signature activities (Relay For Life, Making Strides, etc.) and ACS CAN fundraising.
  • Ensure accountability and compliance with laws, rules, and lobby registration/reporting, as well as internal ACS CAN processes for legal review, finance policies, staff management policies and program tracking and measurement.
  • Lead by example, personally demonstrating the values and behaviors expected of ACS CAN staff.
  • Travel extensively as needed by car and plane or rail, including some overnights and weekends.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree with minimum 10 or more years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Masters or law degree preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with nonprofit advocacy management.

  • Demonstrated ability to attract, develop talent and manage across multiple reporting lines.
  • Political and/or nonprofit fundraising skills and experience preferred.
  • Must be able to manage a regional effort involving multiple projects, meet all deadlines, maintain a flexible work schedule, and lead teams of staff and volunteers to accomplish local, state, and federal policy priorities.
  • Proven ability to manage complexity and collaborate in team-based environment.
  • Ability to use personal computer and knowledge of multiple programs.
  • Experience in budget development and project management.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal political institutions
  • Staff management experience required.
  • Knowledge of health care policy preferred.
  • Knowledge of fundraising practices preferred.
  • Familiarity with legislative and political structures preferred.
  • Extensive travel required.
  • Able to work in and promote 100% tobacco-free environments.
