Lead and/or implement strategic development efforts associated with transportation operations.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Focus on developing transportation strategies, across multiple modes, that support the growth of all food streams (with special attention to fresh produce), by lowering transportation costs and at the same time maintaining excellent delivery service levels and on-time pickups.
- Assist Director, Supply Chain Services with the development of policies, procedures, and systems to efficiently process the acquisition, distribution, and allocation of national donations, produce and purchased products.
- Develop and maintain relationships with private truck fleets to facilitate one point of contact for Feeding America.
- Analyze traffic lane volume and develop cost effective transportation for Feeding America.
- Actively manage the 3PL, 4PL, and asset-based transportation and warehouse vendors, including ensuring that vendors’ meet organizational standards, conducting and analyzing RFP’s, negotiating contracts and establishing sound product handling requirements.
- Set-up scorecards to monitor service levels to ensure performance statistics meet expectations.
- Ensure vendor contract requirements are established, administered and enforced.
- Management of the TMS provider, including working with them on process improvements to ensure that they are aligned with the changing needs of Feeding America.
- Constantly look for process improvements in logistics and transportation processes to lower cost and/or improve service for the organization.
- Establish, track and evaluate the costs and benefit performance criteria for success across all special projects as well as day-to-day operations.
- Engage with professional transportation & logistics organizations as well as other industry professionals to understand “best practices”. Analyze and incorporate those practices as appropriate.
- Serve as a resource for the network on transportation related issues as well as direct programs to assist Members and Regional Produce Cooperatives in reducing costs and improving operational efficiencies.
- Assist the Director, Supply Chain Services in the development and management of department work plan and budget.
Educational Background:
BA/BS or equivalent experience. Graduate degree preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- Must have a minimum of 7 years of experience in working with transportation vendors, including negotiation of contracts and issue resolution.
- Experience with transportation management systems is highly desirable. Experinace with Transplace is a plus.
- Experience with TL, LTL and intermodal shipping, rate, and contract negation.
- Experience with shipping fresh produce is highly desirable.
- Exceptional interpersonal and training skills.
- Excellent planning/organization, logistics and customer service skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications and familiarity with software and internet based logistics products.
