Construction Site Assistant

Charleston Habitat for Humanity is seeking a full-time Construction Assistant to be a part of our unique, inclusive, and impactful nonprofit organization, focused on creating affordable housing opportunities in the greater Charleston area. This position is responsible for building Habitat homes in partnership with volunteer groups, subcontractors, and partner families. The Construction Assistant will be a hands-on builder, work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, and report directly to the Construction Manager.

This position is responsible for building Habitat homes in partnership with volunteer groups, subcontractors, and partner families. The Construction Assistant will be a hands-on builder, work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, and report directly to the Construction Manager.
The primary responsibilities for the Construction Assistant are the following:
- Manage the new home construction work site to complete homes on schedule;
- Build homes in partnership with unskilled and semi-skilled volunteers managing their work on the home builds including framing, sheathing, interior trim work, and landscaping;
- Use organization’s volunteer management system to develop and track a volunteer recruitment plan to aid in home construction including outreach to civic groups, churches, colleges, and other community organizations;
- Plan the scope of work for home building each week with the Construction Manager;
- Ensure that all materials, tools, and supplies are fully stocked at site daily;
- Conduct all aspects of volunteer orientation, paperwork, and safety talk;
- Complete site clean-up and return all materials and equipment to storage facility; and
- Maintain vehicle, trailer, tools, and all other equipment
- High school diploma, current driver’s license, and a clean driver record;
- Working knowledge of construction practices;
- Strong communication skills and the ability to lead volunteers in construction work;
- Previous experience working for Habitat for Humanity, or similar non-profit, preferred;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Project, Excel and Word preferred;
- Detail-oriented and able to work both independently and as a collaborative team player;
- Ability to prioritize tasks and multi-task on build projects; and
- Ability to lift at least 80 lbs., climb ladders, work on roofs and crawl space, and work outside in all types of weather on a busy, loud, dirty home construction site
