The Senior Associate Director of Philanthropy III (Sr. ADOP III) is a new senior fundraising position within The Nature Conservancy in Colorado and will provide strategic, inspired leadership to a team of out the door fundraising staff in addition to managing a small portfolio of donors and prospects. The Sr. ADOP III reports to and works closely with the Director of Philanthropy (DOP) to manage members of the Colorado program’s fundraising team and to secure a team goal of $10M-$20M per year in philanthropic resources for our mission.
Philanthropy Leadership (50%)
- Manage up to six out-the-door fundraising staff who are responsible for raising outright, complex and deferred gifts from individual donors and prospects.
- Foster productivity, accountability and job satisfaction for direct and in-direct reports through the regular use of performance metrics, portfolio reviews, and donor strategy sessions.
- Promote collaboration among and across philanthropy team within Colorado, with other chapters and with philanthropy staff at the World Office.
- Accountable for $10M-20M team fundraising goal per year.
Major & Principal Gifts Fundraising (5%)
- Manage a portfolio of up to 30 accounts consisting of trustees, donors and prospects with a focus on 6- and 7-figure donors with a goal of raising $2M or more annually. Responsible for prospect identification and qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Responsible for direct asks for both global and local priorities to meet funding needs.
- Understand organizational and project financials, have an advanced knowledge of charitable giving, and discuss complex charitable options with donors. S/he will discuss assets proficiently and listen for opportunities for gifts of assets or other non-cash gifts, such as planned gifts and trade lands.
- Liaises with various individuals, teams and business units across The Nature Conservancy, senior management, trustees, committees, and external consultants at the state, regional and global levels.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Directly manage a portfolio of up to 30 donors, including those with the capacity to give over $1M. Responsible for 60-90 moves annually, including 20-30 visits. Annual fundraising goal of $2M or more, along with a goal for planned gift notifications and new prospect qualifications.
- Supervise out-the-door fundraising staff.
- Financial accountability for setting and meeting personal and team fundraising targets, reliably projecting and evaluating results and developing corrective strategies as needed.
- Plan and lead collaborative and complex programs or initiatives that will ensure departmental goals are achieved.
- Decisions may have program-wide impact, affect staff in non-program areas, and bind the organization financially or legally.
- Act independently and resolve complex issues within scope.
- Direct or participate in negotiations for complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.
- Maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive and emotionally charged information.
- Persuasively convey the mission of The Nature Conservancy to diverse groups important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
- Minimize legal and reputational risk to the Conservancy and ensure compliance with all applicable external regulations, TNC policies, financial and ethical standards.
- Follow standard operating procedures and proficiently use Conservancy systems, including collaboration tools and constituent management databases.
- Travel occasionally and work flexible hours, including long hours and weekends as needed.
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.

- Experience cultivating and closing major or planned gifts of $100,000 or more.
- Experience, coursework or other training in current and evolving trends in charitable giving, particularly in the area of campaigns, major gifts and planned giving.
- Valid driver's license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and 10 years related experience.
- Experience in working in partnership with trustees or board members.
- Track record of cultivating and closing major or planned gifts of over $1,000,000.
- Ability to design and direct successful fundraising initiatives, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.
- Proven ability to simultaneously manage a portfolio and lead a team.
- Ability to determine a funder’s interests, capacity and likelihood for helping the Conservancy meet its goals,and tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
- Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
- Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy, and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
- Advanced knowledge of complex charitable gift planning.
- Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Experience working in a large, complex, not-for-profit environment.
