Genetics Nurse Consultant

Works with healthcare providers, blood cancer patients and family members to assist in understanding and utilization of appropriate genetic tests and genomic profiling tests (hereafter referred to as ‘genetics or genetic’). Utilizes specialized knowledge and understanding of genetics/genomics, hematologic malignancies and nursing assessment skills to determine qualification for specific testing panels. Educates patients and family about their diagnosis and the application of testing results to guide diagnosis, prognosis and treatment decisions. Supports patients and family through treatment decisions, including decisions to end treatment with curative intent. In addition to genetics responsibilities, collaborates with LLS Clinical Trial Nurse Navigators and Information Specialists to provide education and clinical trial support services to patients and family. Serves as primary resource to Clinical Trial Nurse Navigators and Information Specialists for guidance around all aspects of genetic/genomic testing and interpretation.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serve as internal LLS resource on the use of genetic/genomic analyses in the diagnosis, classification, prognosis and therapeutic decision making in hematologic malignancies
  • Consult with healthcare providers regarding patient cases that may benefit from genetic/genomic testing
  • Differentiate between genetic tests and provide information to assist healthcare providers in their selection of the most suitable test for a particular patient
  • Provide information to patients, family members, and healthcare providers to aid in the interpretation of genetic/genomic testing results
  • Respond to questions from patients and family members about genetic/genomic testing and results
  • Guide patients and providers to resources to assist with reimbursement challenges surrounding genomic testing or treatments recommended as an outcome of genomic testing
  • Collaborate in the development of patient and provider directed education tools and resources about genetic/genomic testing
  • Remain current in the field of genetics and genomics clinical nursing
  • Participate in the diffusion and communication of appropriate genomic research to providers
  • Function in the role of Clinical Trial Nurse Navigator, helping patients identify and enroll in an appropriate trial and incorporating the results of genetic testing
  • Independently maintain own caseload of patients seeking enrollment into clinical trials
  • Use problem solving skills to help patients overcome obstacles to trial enrollment
  • Maintain/increase knowledge and understanding of hematologic cancers, blood and bone marrow transplant and psychosocial aspects of living with cancer
  • Contribute to continual process improvement of Clinical Trial Support Center procedures
  • Develop effective working relationships within the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and with trial site staff, investigators, sponsors, patient and professional organizations
  • Exhibit comprehensive understanding of ethical standards and Federal Regulations in human subjects research
  • Participate in team meetings and special projects as requested
Educational Background: 
Bachelor of Science in Nursing required, advanced degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Current RN licensure required
  • OCN certification preferred
  • A minimum of two years experience as a genetic clinical nurse or advanced practice nurse in genetics
  • Completion of advanced training program in genetics/genomics nursing
  • Current certification in Genetic/Genomic Clinical Nursing preferred
