Driver, Hope Lodge

Provides rides for Hope Lodge Guests to and from treatment at area medical facilities and other errands, outings and special events authorized by lodge management utilizing the Hope Lodge vehicle(s) assigned.  Follows specific regularly scheduled routes, charter routes and requests from lodge management for unscheduled pick ups or drop offs.  Provides assistance and support to patients and caregivers. Ensures safety at all times.

The schedule for this position is Monday and Tuesday from 8am - 4pm.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Operates assigned passenger vehicles safely, efficiently, and in a professional manner.
  • Maintains the safety and comfort of guests as a primary focus.   
  • Loads and unloads luggage, packages and other items as appropriate.
  • Monitors traffic and weather conditions and notifies management of potential problems.
  • Reports accidents or other safety situations to appropriate Hope Lodge staff.
  • Inspects exterior and interior of vehicle at beginning of each shift for properly operating headlights, turn signals, brake lights, interior courtesy lamps, air conditioning or heating, warning lamps, mirror adjustment, properly inflated tires, windshield wipers, vehicle damage, etc. prior to moving vehicle.  
  • Responsible for ensuring inside and outside of vehicle are properly cleaned and fueled on an ongoing basis.  Keeps interior of vehicle neat and orderly.  
  • Monitors vehicle condition and records/reports any malfunctioning items or damage.  
  • Learns and remembers locations of various destination points serviced by the fleet including lodging, entertainment and attraction sites.
  • Treats all guests, volunteers, and others in a courteous, friendly and professional manner.
  • Provides assistance/support to guests, their families, and caregivers, and ensures that a warm, safe, supportive environment is maintained and the needs of guests are met.
  • Tracks rides given, miles driven and vehicle maintenance.
  • Helps cover building in the absence of other staff including: providing direction to incoming guests, volunteers and vendors.
  • Adheres to all American Cancer Society privacy and confidentiality requirements.
  • Maintains a positive and professional attitude and work environment at all times.
  • May be required to assist with cleaning the facility, including guest rooms and assisting with making guest beds.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
High School diploma, GED or equivalent or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Some post-secondary education desirable.

  • Proficient verbal communication skills.  
  • Computer skills only necessary for tracking of time reporting, taking required ACS trainings and completion of performance records via Society Pathways.   
  • The ability to remain calm under stressful situations, and handle self in a professional manner at all times required.   
  • Ability to empathize with cancer patients and caregivers.  
  • The ability to remain calm, poised and respectful in city driving conditions regardless of weather, road conditions and other drivers.  
  • Experience excelling within a customer service driven position is a plus.
  • Ability to prioritize needs and perform tasks in a high-pressure environment.  Experience within hospitality housing or similar environment a plus.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.  
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.  A commercial license may be required. Clean driving record.  
  • Able to work occasional evenings for after-hours group outings and special events is a plus.
