Context: The Development Associate supports the Chapter Director to develop and implement the Chapter’s fundraising programs and activities.

Scope: The Development Associate works closely with staff and volunteer leaders to develop and implement effective fundraising strategies and programs through individual solicitation, events and direct response solicitation techniques.  Ensures Chapter compliance with Sierra Club fundraising policies and with relevant grant and foundation requirements.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Supports fundraising events and activities; including direct mail appeals, major gift donor identification and solicitation, donor relations, and events design and planning.
  • Assists the Chapter Director and Operations Manager in overall strategic communications, cultivation and stewardship plans for major donors.
  • Assists the Chapter Director and Treasurer in the development of the annual fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Assists with identifying host committees and guest speakers for annual fundraiser, and other events throughout the year.
  • Monitors and prepares reports of fundraising progress and forecasting as needed.
  • Assists with the writing of fundraising appeals, donation acknowledgement letters, compelling donor stewardship communications including annual reports and accomplishment updates.
  • Enters and records all donations received into the Salesforce database.
  • Assists with coordination of and tracking acknowledgement communications.
  • Works with the Chapter Director to identify appropriate grantmakers and write grant proposals to solicit funding from private, and public foundations as needed.
  • Develops and maintains expertise in professional field by reading current literature, and attending seminars, conferences, and meetings when possible.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 4 years experience in designing and managing fundraising campaigns; environment preferred, but not required
  • Demonstrated skills in fundraising events planning
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, particularly around effective program storytelling and communicating impact
  • Computer proficiency.  Experience with Salesforce a plus.
  • Familiarity with InDesign a plus
  • Familiarity with print design and publishing practices a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple important priorities and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of effective, high touch contact for donor, volunteer and staff constituencies, and an unwavering customer service orientation
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people to build effective teams
  • Skill in using discretion, tact and diplomacy in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters
  • Demonstrated track record in achieving grant awards is a plus
