Under the direction of the Project Director for Biomedical Studies, the Research Assistant works with other research staff in implementing prevention and treatment trials according to specified study protocols.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Typical responsibilities include:  Participates in maintaining confidential study records; performing study visits; obtaining informed consent and conducting study procedures; providing clients with emotional support and making appropriate referrals;  reporting laboratory results to study participants; performing blood draws using appropriate phlebotomy techniques; maintaining the functioning of the lab;  processing, cataloging, storing and delivering laboratory specimens; performing quality control on laboratory procedures and results; entering data into computer databases; and operating, calibrating and maintaining equipment used in quantitative and qualitative laboratory analysis. 

Additional responsibilities include: the recruitment of study volunteers for specified clinical research trials; identifies creative measures for reaching potential study volunteers; promoting open communication and discussion among co-workers regarding changes in protocol procedure and other pertinent information; maintaining relationships with medical providers; maintaining current knowledge of HIV research; assisting with protocol development and revision and questionnaire/interview format revision; and assists with logistics of study team meetings and conference calls.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least one year clinical and/or behavioral research experience highly desirable. 
  • Familiarity working with people who are HIV infected or at risk for HIV infection.
  • Phlebotomy experience highly desirable
  • Working knowledge of HIV pathophysiology, prevention, and treatment is highly desirable.
  • Attention to detail extremely important. 
  • Some understanding of subjective physical assessment and interviewing. 
  • Ability to function autonomously in a collaborative interdisciplinary team. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills is a must. 
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Capacity for detail oriented multitasking.   
  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse environment preferred.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals required.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Commensurate with experience.
