Additional Information:

Shanti Bhavan has been in existence for 21 years and has been profiled in The New York Times, the Charlie Rose Show, Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat, the Discovery Channel, ABC News and Glamour Magazine’s “Get Schooled” series. In 2017, the four part Netflix Original Documentary series, Daughters of Destiny, featured Shanti Bhavan.

Shanti Bhavan serves children of the lowest caste - all of the children in the program hail from socio-economically depressed areas of rural India, mostly from the "Untouchable" or "Dalit" communities. The mission of Shanti Bhavan is to empower children from India’s lowest socioeconomic class to break the cycle of generational poverty through education, leadership, and compassion. They are given a full scholarship, room and board while they attend the school. Shanti Bhavan means “haven of peace” and the school truly is a “haven” for students aging from pre-K-12th grade. They are provided with a world-class education in a safe and nurturing environment.

About Us
Mission:

Shanti Bhavan’s mission is to uplift the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children of India’s “lowest caste” by providing them with a world-class education and holistic care. The project offers free, high-quality education at its residential school and subsequently at top-tier colleges. Shanti Bhavan provides each child with complete care: education, clothing, food, medical care, and a loving home and supportive community. This is 17 years of intense intervention per child – from age 4 to 21 – to break the cycle of poverty in a single generation. Shanti Bhavan is the only program of its type in the world and represents a radical shift from the current ineffective short-term basic literacy educational models. By giving top-level, long-term education and guidance, Shanti Bhavan provides the poorest of the poor children with the opportunity to pursue high-paying jobs and leadership opportunities. These children have gone onto uplift their families and communities, creating a ripple effect that is impacting thousands of others in need. Shanti Bhavan’s success has been unprecedented and continues to grow each year.
