The Community Outreach Specialist will play a leadership role in overseeing strategies to develop a new program that builds volunteerism, community and inspires support for conservation.  

We are looking for a proven professional capable of developing and launching programs. Nurturing relationships with volunteers, community organizations and businesses.    

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Community Outreach Specialist will be responsible for maintaining existing and creating new volunteer initiatives in stewardship, membership services, communications, science, development, administration, and other program areas. They will help raise the organization’s profile through select and strategic venues and partnerships, may serve as “brand ambassador” for the Conservancy’s mission, and inspires people to want to learn more and engage with the organization in meaningful ways. They will coordinate projects with staff and volunteers, maintain and improve the volunteer database, and promote volunteer leadership. They will write and edit promotional materials for the program. They will recruit, provide training and recognition, and ensure continuity and quality of all volunteer programs. The Coordinator will provide leadership and direction to the volunteers and will work cooperatively with Conservancy staff and members, as well as partner organizations, agencies and businesses.

The Community Outreach Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of a strategic community engagement program aimed at:

  • increasing the Conservancy’s visibility,
  • engaging a broader constituency, with a focus on families and businesses/corporations, in support of conservation,
  • engaging those who are interested in conservation but not yet familiar with the Conservancy, and
  • reaching the next generation of conservation leaders and supporters. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Develop creative recruiting concepts to engage volunteers;
  • Develop outreach and volunteer activities that attract and engage target audiences as per the business unit/department priorities;
  • Use software systems to track volunteers and special activity results;
  • Manages a volunteer engagement program and ensure that it complies with TNC policies and procedures; 
  • May be responsible for the oversight of volunteer youth qualifications.
  • May supervise administrative staff and/or volunteers, interns, or temporary staff.
  • Manage a budget to complete a project and minimizes expenses, maximizes revenue and meets quality standards.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and physical exertion and/or strain.
  • Willingness to travel and work select evenings and/or weekends, as needed.
  • Coordinate multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing a timeline;
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, environmental education, business or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of 2 years related experience or equivalent combination.
  • Must meet all TNC Youth Qualification requirements and background checks.
  • Experience in business writing, editing, and proofreading;
  • Experience in organizing and managing a volunteer program;
  • Experience managing diverse activities to meet deadlines; and
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
  • Project Management skills.
  • Experienced in community relations or relationship building.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Cross cultural; multi-cultural; multi-lingual skills, background or experience a plus.
  • Experience serving as a “brand ambassador” or Community Engagement Specialist for a company or organization.
  • Ability to promote events and communicate with individuals and communities through social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter.
  • Experienced in developing, implementing, and measuring strategic outreach plans and programs,
  • Knowledge of current and evolving trends in marketing, conservation and public relations.
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • 1-year experience in organizing and managing a volunteer program;
  • Ability to analyze information for the purpose of preparing reports, coordinating efforts, and solving problems;
  • Ability to write and edit written materials for use with member communications and special events;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the structure and needs required by a volunteer program;
  • Database management skills with ability to produce reports;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; and/or
  • Supervisory experience.
