The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a student intern for its Berlin office. Ideally, the intern will be available for 3 months beginning in September 2018 through November 2018. Interns will gain knowledge and skills in fundraising, database management, event planning, and research. This internship is best suited for individuals interested in gaining experience in a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. In order to provide a valuable and well-rounded internship experience, interns will attend planning and department meetings with staff and will have the opportunity to take advantage of in-house trainings and briefings.
Internships are unpaid. Interns may be provided a small stipend to cover lunch and local travel costs as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
- Event planning for the Voices for Justice Dinner in Spring 2018 and various outreach and cultivation events (i.e., film screenings and receptions);
- Preparing visits of HRW researchers and advocates;
- Creating donor profiles and database management;
- Conducting desk research on funding possibilities in Germany; and
- Other tasks and projects as they arise.
- Students who are interested in fundraising, outreach, and special events within a human rights context are encouraged to apply.
- Experience with event planning or fundraising is desirable.
- Applicants should be well-organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and reliable with strong time management skills and a positive attitude.
- Excellent oral and written command of German and English are essential. Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, internet applications, database) are required.
