Context: The Development Associate supports the Development Manager to develop, , recommend, and implement the Chapters fundraising programs and activities in order to achieve the Chapters fundraising goals.

Scope: Working closely with the volunteer leadership and staff to develop effective fundraising strategies and programs through grant proposals, individual solicitation telemarketing, events and direct response solicitation techniques.  Ensures Chapter compliance with Sierra Club fundraising policies and with relevant grant and foundation requirements.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Supports fundraising events and activities; including appeals, sponsorships, grant proposals, donor identification and solicitation, and donor relations.
  • Assists the Development Manager in the development of the annual fundraising goals and objectives
  • Identifies and obtains sponsorships for annual dinner gala, and other events throughout the year.
  • Maintains regular calling shifts to reach out to members to give and increase their donations.
  • Monitors and prepares reports of fundraising progress and forecasting as needed.
  • Writes grant proposals to solicit funding from private, and public foundations as needed.
  • Develops and maintains expertise in professional field by reading current literature, and attending seminars, conferences, and meetings when possible.
  • Supports Membership Outreach Team as needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 2 years of prior experience in designing and managing fundraising campaigns and staff for environmental or other non-profit organizations.  Canvass management a plus.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in fundraising campaigns and individual donor solicitation.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Skill in making presentations and public speaking
  • Computer Proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Access required online databases and donor prospecting tools.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
