The kitchen assistant works under general supervision of the kitchen manager on duty and assists with kitchen set-up at mobile classes and the Simple Cooking with Heart kitchen. The kitchen assistant will assist with measuring and mixing ingredients according to American Heart Association recipes and will use a variety of manual and/or electric kitchen utensils and equipment, such as: mixers, slicers, blenders, knives, scales and ovens.
The kitchen assistant may give some instruction in helping students understand class material. The kitchen assistant will provide additional supervision of students to ensure that all safety and sanitation procedures are being followed. This is a part-time, one-year grant-funded position.
- Ensuring proper sanitation procedures during the class time
- Ensuring all workstations are clean and sanitized
- Assisting students in becoming familiar with their class assignments
- Assembling all tools required
- Washing, trimming, cutting, preparing and measuring all raw materials according to instructions
- Preparing equipment (pre-heat oven, line baking sheets, etc.)
- Maintaining the shared items table during class
- Maintaining positive energy and ability to think quickly to any unforeseen challenges that arise.
- Helping students with the finishing touches of their recipe, encourage creative ways to present their prepared dishes
- Ensuring that all students clean their dishes and equipment
- Taking inventory with the student of all their equipment and double-check that all equipment is properly stored
- Performing other duties as assigned
- Requires a basic knowledge of food products and terminology, as well as the ability to read and follow recipes/instructions
- Requires the ability to read, follow instructions, and prepare food in accordance with the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) food safety program
- Requires the ability to operate kitchen machinery, such as mixers, slicers, blenders, knives, scales and ovens
- Ability to perform simple math calculations to count and monitor inventory
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with students and other guests
- Preferred Certification: ServSafe sanitation certification is preferred
- Must be flexible: 2 days per week; occasional weekends
- This is a part-time, one-year grant-funded position
- Requires a minimum of one year prior cooking experience in a food service operation
