Kitchen Assistant

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for aKitchen Assistant, in our Mid-Atlantic Affiliate office located in Baltimore, MD ! The Kitchen Assistant performs some instruction, helping students understand class material and giving students more individual attention. The assistant helps students understand lessons, procedures and processes they are struggling with. The Kitchen Assistant will provide additional supervision of students to ensure that all safety and sanitation procedures are being followed.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Class Oversight

  • Ensuring proper sanitation procedures during the class time
  • Ensuring all workstations are clean and sanitized
  • Assisting students in becoming familiar with their class assignments
  • Helping students to develop a plan of action-prioritizing preparations i.e. cooking beans requires longer tine than sautéing greens
  • Helping students pull their mise en place “everything ready”
  • Assembling all tools required
  • Washing, trimming, cutting, preparing and measuring all raw materials according to instructions
  • Preparing equipment) pre-heat oven, line baking sheets, turn on stove…)
  • Maintaining the shared items table during class
  • Maintaining positive energy and have solutions for any unforeseen challenges that arise. If in doubt ask for help
  • Coaching students, share small techniques that you are proud of, any tips that you find useful in your practice (i.e. pealing ginger with the back of a spoon, crush garlic before chopping)
  • Helping students with the finishing touches of their recipe, encourage creative ways to present their prepared dishes
  • Ensuring that all students clean all their dishes and equipment
  • Taking inventory with the students of all their equipment and double check that all equipment is properly stored

Prior to Class

  • Attending debriefing session prior to the start of the class
  • Getting familiar with the venue and layout of the workstations
  • Taking inventory of all perishable and nonperishable items
  • Ensuring all perishable items are properly stored
  • Maintaining positive energy and have solutions for any unforeseen challenges that arise. If in doubt, ask for help.
  • Communicating any feedback from the in-class tasks and other assignments with Kitchen manager
  • Performing other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 2+ years of culinary experience
  • 1+ year of culinary instruction experience
  • Will be required to work with kitchen appliances and tools (oven, stove, knives, etc.)_
