The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a COMMUNITY TEACHING KITCHEN MANAGER in ourBALTIMORE, MD office.
Responsible for management and oversight of the Simple Cooking with Heart Kitchen - Baltimore (the "Kitchen") program and curriculum. Provide overall development, management, oversight and implementation of all aspects of American Heart Association programming at the Kitchen. To provide supervisory management of kitchen staff and volunteers affiliated with the Simple Cooking with Heart Kitchen – Baltimore and our mobile and community outreach activities and programs. The position will provide strategic direction and implementation of expanded services offered by the AHA to develop the kitchen into a “Heart Health Hub” for the community.
- Develops, implements and manages the day-to-day and overhead operations of the Kitchen facility, including developing policies/guidelines applicable to the Kitchen. Responsible for: managing operating hours; ensuring policies for proper sanitation guidelines/standards are followed; filing and updating permits as required; and servicing all equipment for compliance.
- Responsible for the Kitchen’s budget and procurement process including preparing the budget and managing expenditures and impact. Projects inventory needs and utilization, places all orders and stock levels to minimize waste. Ensures timely and accurate delivery of products, food and equipment required to meet the needs for instruction/classes.
- Responsible for tracking and reporting of all activities associated with the kitchen. Works with appropriate staff to prepare and submit all funding reports and program evaluations.
- Creates the program, heart healthy menu, class curriculum and coursework and prepares lesson plans to support class cooking demonstrations for the Kitchen. Develops customized course instruction to meet the various economic and social backgrounds of audiences who have been referred or sign up to participate in course instruction.
- Manages a variety of volunteers to provide instructions and information for healthy meal preparation (approximately 12-20 participants per class). Manage interns and volunteers to conduct final assessment of work and prepares reports to determine class credit and/or stipend for internship participation.
- Serves as lead spokesperson for Kitchen at community events, media opportunities, etc. Determine tools and resources needed for outreach (collateral, etc.) and develops them accordingly. Collaborates with the Director of Marketing and Communications and other affiliate staff to provide content for social media properties (website, Facebook, etc.).
- Primary point of contact on all operations of the Kitchen, classes/course curriculum and other events or activities of the facility.
- Provide appropriate instructions to participants who enroll in the program and participate in cooking demonstrations. Gives feedback and additional instruction to class participants on meal preparation, nutrition counseling and other activities to support changes in lifestyles and fitness.
- Recruits, selects, hires, trains and supervises all kitchen personnel. Manages and directs the work of the Kitchen Coordinator/Assistants. Conducts annual performance reviews for hired staff. Reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of the Kitchen Assistants’ work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Will be required to work with Kitchen appliances and tools (oven, stove, knifes, etc.)
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds in order to transport the mobile kitchen equipment and materials
- Must have reliable mode of transportation in order to facilitate the transport of kitchen materials
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Public speaking/presentation skills
- Public health knowledge
- Experience in public health outreach, workforce development and volunteer management is valued
Required Experience
- 3+ years of culinary experience
- 3+ years of kitchen management/budgetary experience
- Willing to work flexible schedule and travel within market and affiliate territory
