The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for the Executive Director of our Kern County Division. As the Executive Director, you are responsible for advancing the mission of the American Heart Association across Kern County through inspiring passionate commitment with our mission . This includes setting and achieving bold goals in driving revenue/ fundraising, volunteer leadership recruitment and engagement and collaborating internally and externally to improve the cardiovascular health throughout the communities we serve.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Leads, develops and directly implements a comprehensive strategic plan that includes a robust development/ fundraising strategy resulting in aggressive unrestricted revenue growth to meet and exceed established goals on a sustainable basis. The Kern County Division's special event fundraising includes engagement from corporations, teams and individuals with Heart Walk, Go Red For Women and Go Red Por Tu Corazón. Balanced campaign growth also includes revenue from Worksite and Community health initiatives, Individual Giving, Workplace Giving and Corporate Relations. The Division's net goal for this fiscal year is $610,000.
  • Drives the ongoing process for the identification, recruitment, orientation, training and retention of medical and non-medical volunteer leadership, including a countywide Board of Directors, with the ability to drive mission integration and revenue.
  • Supervises and coaches staff in a trusting, team-oriented climate in which communication is open, best practices and established guidelines are followed and interdependent collaboration is actively promoted, fostered and recognized for success.
  • Personally develops and cultivates partnerships with key organizations and philanthropic individuals to maximize the AHA’s visibility, impact and financial resources.
  • Responsible for overall operations of the division, control of cost center budget and implementation of AHA and Western States Affiliate policies and standards.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in voluntary health organizations or comparable settings with demonstrated track record in setting and achieving aggressive goals on sustainable basis
  • 3+ years of experience recruiting, engaging and activating executive level corporate and medical volunteers
  • Proven experience managing and leading a high performing staff team
  • Agility with group dynamics and demonstrated track record of building effective teams of staff and volunteer partnership
  • Ability to credibly establish and execute a strategic plan across functional areas and disciplines in a complex and highly dynamic environment, effectively translating strategies to measurable goals and plans
  • Proven ability to think strategically, analyze market data, identify key trends with experience in the strategy development and execution of initiatives to achieve fundraising and operational goals
  • Strong interpersonal, discipline, time management, communication (written and oral) and presentation skills
  • Drive to continuously learn external and internal developments and effectively apply and translate concepts across audiences.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • This is a home-based position with extensive local travel and requires ability towork effectively from home and remotely.

Here are some of the preferred experience/skills we are looking for:

  • Experience with the American Heart Association or similar non-profit experience
  • Successful corporate fundraising experience including securing and managing higher level sponsorships
  • Experience with special event fundraising
