Provides strategy and leadership in the creation and distribution of health and cancer information, and resources.  Direct responsibilities for teams responsible for editorial management, financial and editorial development  of three journals (CA, CANCER, CANCER CYTOPATHOLOGY); teams responsible for   editorial management, financial and editorial development  of consumer and professional book publishing; and the teams responsible for news coverage as well as the  medical teams developing content for online and offline distribution. Develops strategy for all areas of direct responsibility. Responsible for integrating mission content with the other areas of the Society.  Key lead for IT, Corporate Communications and Marketing in regard to medical and health information in Society publications both online and offline, including social and mobile media.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist each director to build editorial strategies consistent with ACS goals and procedures.
  • Ensure that ACS content is developed to assist constituents with their important health decisions.
  • Develop rich understanding of ACS constituent interactions, preferences and motivations and effectively develop strategies to achieve mission objectives.
  • Timely and accurate reporting to organization of all areas of responsibility.
  • Assist in building, reviewing and adhering to business plans.
  • Drive successful completion of business plans to accomplish established goals.
  • Responsible for workforce management (i.e. appropriate balance of staff to work volume in all areas of responsibility).
  • Budget development and management.
  • Share best practices within business unit and organization-wide to expand CRM and focus on constituent’s needs.
  • Organize and direct quality work efforts.
  • Maximize team performance.
  • Provide strategic guidance for team.
  • Negotiate solutions and resolve conflicts.
  • Develop, motivate and retain employees.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain external content and strategic relationships.
  • Integration of Mission Content with other Society channels
  • Oversee review processes for consumer-facing products  (app, campaigns, other materials) for consistency and accuracy
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or related field; plus 10 years experience.

  • Experience with creating and managing content teams in multiple media, preferably at a national level/international level for a mainstream audience.   Knowledge of editorial style, ethics, and journalistic processes.. Facility with CMS systems and Digital Publishing best practices
