Under the general direction of the Sr Consultant, Financial, the SPO Financial Consultant provides the post-award financial planning and analysis support grants and sponsored projects at the American Cancer Society.This position represents the Society’s sponsored programs office to ensure compliance with governing federal, state, sponsor, and Society requirements and generally accepted accounting principles. This position serves as a key resource providing guidance, oversight and support on overall financial management and analysis of the sponsored programs. The incumbent is expected to foster collaborative relationships with stakeholders and exhibit a strong commitment to customer service and excellence.Responsibilities include performing work related to financial planning and analysis, program budgeting, grant reconciliation, contract and grants management, procurement, and general fiscal assistance. Performs advanced professional accounting and budget analysis duties that require independent judgment and initiative.
- Manage analysis for the post award management of sponsored programs and grants and collaborates with stakeholders through periodic meetings and communications to address/resolve any award financial discrepancies or other post-award related matters such as submission of no-cost extensions, budget revisions or continued funding to ensure they are within sponsor guidelines.
- Work with Corporate Center / Regional staff and finance managers to guide key business decisions with analytical outputs that will allow for informed decision making for grants and restricted funds.
- Partner with assigned grant portfolio managers in developing sound business case analysis and ensure appropriate Financial / Income / Mission metrics for grants are incorporated when and where appropriate.
- Execute on the budgeting and forecasting process for assigned grants portfolio through development of detailed revenue/expense budgets and forecasts in partnership with FP&A;
- Monitor grant and contract related financial targets and metrics against actual results on a monthly and quarterly basis; provide timely monthly and quarterly analytical reporting to assigned grant managers, SPO staff, and finance leaders
- Conduct ad hoc financial analysis and continually strive to identify opportunities to provide financial leadership aimed increasing revenue and driving more grant and restricted dollars towards mission.
- Interprets and administers rules, regulations, policies and procedures by Society, external funding agencies, federal and state agencies.
- Continuously seeks to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of business processes of the post award operation and provides and/or implements well-conceived recommendations.
- Prepares all required financial and other non-technical reports to sponsor for review and submission to sponsor utilizing the appropriate format supported by comprehensive work papers and supporting documentation within established deadlines in accordance with established operating procedures.
- Financial Statement preparation and review. Ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions. Responsible for preparing journal entries and grant-related invoices.
- Responsible for working with and advising principal investigators/project directors and other staff, conducting research on accounts, and interpreting technical information to grantees
- Responsible for performing account analysis and reconciliation for monthly grant-related expenditures
- Responsible for identifying; recording and posting monthly; quarterly and year-end accruals
- Assist in the year-end government grant financial audit. Providing supporting schedules and documentation
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

- Ability to build and maintain relationships with departments to better understand business and impact on account analysis and reconciliations
- Responsible for documentation of assigned processes and tasks
- May recommend policies procedures, and guidelines for the approval of monitoring of grants/contracts
- Ability to perform non-routine work
- Special projects and testing as assigned.
- Sponsored programs audit experience preferred. Knowledge of federal grant post-award administration, financial accounting principles, Uniform Guidance 2 CFR 200, OMB Circulars, Cost Accounting Standards and GAAP. CPA preferred.

The candidate should possess specialized training or knowledge of the Netsuite accounting system, or an equivalent system and experience in all areas of accounting.
- Knowledge of a system-based General Ledger
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel (intermediate level or higher desired)
