The Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps (AORC) mobilizes nearly 75 AmeriCorps members to help educate youth and the public, restore, conserve, and preserve environmental resources, improve food distribution to people in poverty, support reduced waste and recycling initiatives, and support economic resilience through climate mitigation and sustainability projects.

Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps members serve a term of 12 months accumulating a total of 1,700 hours of community based service, an average service load of 35 hours a week. AORC runs August 29, 2022 to August 19, 2023.

Areas of Responsibility: 

AORC service falls into one or more of the following tracks:

    • Water and watershed restoration and conservation
    • Land stewardship and conservation
    • Public lands access
    • Hiking, biking, and walking trail-building
    • Invasive species, native species, and botany
    • Sustainable forestry
    • Native medicinals and non-timber forest products
  • Agriculture
    • Food access and hunger
    • Sustainable agriculture
  • Environmental Education
    • Citizen Science
    • Youth education
    • Community education
  • Reduced Waste
    • Waste reduction
    • Dumpsite cleanups
    • Upcycling and reuse

    • Home weatherization

Skills/Experience: 
  • Good communication and cooperation skills
  • Computer literacy and willingness to learn
  • Passion for the health of people and environment in Appalachian Ohio
  • Interest in climate mitigation and resilience work and serving Appalachian communities
  • Comfort with speaking and the ability to work with diverse groups of people, independently and in a team setting
  • Some ability to serve flexible hours, including evenings and weekends if needed
  • Some (but not all) positions require the ability to hike extended distances over rough terrain and the ability to carry up to 40 lb. of equipment
  • Access to transportation is needed
  • General knowledge of Appalachian Ohio culture is preferred
  • Must be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States (45 CFR § 2522.200)
Compensation/Benefits: 
  • An annual living allowance of $19,802
  • An education award of $6,495 for a completed term of service to be used to pay student loans or for future education
