The South Asian Helpline and Referral Agency (SAHARA) is a non-profit organization providing services to survivors of all forms of abuse in the South Asian community by providing them with culturally-sensitive and linguistically-specific services.

The Staff Attorney performs various task to support individuals by providing consultation and completing legal paperwork and/or providing representation on legal matters.  The Staff Attorney also acts as a liaison between the individual and other legal community partners.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Job Duties:

  • Conduct legal assessment of clients and provide consultation/advice on matters relating to family law, immigration, and other legal matters
  • Provide restraining order education, preparation, and processing
  • Provide court hearing preparation, accompaniment, and representation to clients using specific agency-developed criteria
  • Assist clients with the preparation of declarations and supporting documents for family law and immigration matters
  • Maintain Memoranda of Understanding with collaborating agencies
  • Establish and foster relationships with legal aid partners and supporters, as well as create a network of pro bono attorneys
  • Organize, manage, and coordinate Citizenship Assistance and legal workshops covering topics relevant to the community’s needs
  • Act as a liaison with and provide referrals to community resources (legal and non-legal)
  • Collaborate with case managers and therapists to create a multi-disciplinary case management plan to achieve goals for the client
  • Participate in grant writing and editing, as well as manage and report upon the legal components of grant deliverables, goals, and deadlines
  • Participate in outreach activities at various locations to educate the South Asian community about legal issues and agency services.
  • Maintain documentation related to activities performed, service plans, legal notes, and client data, as well as ensure timely submission of reports, data entry and document completion
Educational Background: 
• J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school
• License and good standing with the California State Bar
• 40-Hour Domestic Violence Training certificate
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent oral and presentation skills, along with the ability to organize and communicate written information in a concise and cohesive manner
  • Fluency in Hindi, Gujrati, Urdu or Punjabi is preferred
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to take initiative, use good judgment, and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to gather, assemble and analyze information
  • 40-Hour Domestic Violence Training certificate
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • High degree of professionalism and accountability
  • Valid California Driver’s license and the ability to travel to multiple local locations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
Compensation/Benefits: 

Partial reimbursement for verified health insurance plan, dental insurance assistance.

Compensation based on experience and skills match.  Current salary level is $62,400.
