To write, edit and create content across platforms, programs and campaigns for March of Dimes. This Writer role will be responsible for writing much of our marketing and communications content and helping to develop templates to distribute that content to stakeholders, and get it approved. This position will find, track and write stories that bring the March of Dimes mission to life and cover a wide range of topics across our organization. Platforms for content that will require daily writing and editing include digital, social, speeches, direct mail, marketing campaigns and ads. This position will create and edit internal blog, email, toolkit and standard language templates to help staff communicate our stories and mission impact. This position will also edit for brand and style consistency across all March of Dimes materials. This position will be accountable for writing and editing content to keep it timely and new for our digital asset system and external blog. This position requires strong writing, editing and project management skills, and tech savvy. This position will report to the Editorial Director and is a full-time, exempt position located in Arlington, VA.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Finding, developing and writing stories that bring the March of Dimes mission to life and cover our wide-ranging priorities, including mom and baby health, advocacy, research, event promotion and donor stewardship.
  • Writing and editing across multiple platforms, such as digital, social, speeches, direct mail, marketing campaigns and ads.
  • Creating copy from scratch as well as working with stakeholders to finesse copy to fit the material and platform.
  • Working with internal stakeholders and external partners to source stories that resonate with our target audiences.
  • Identifying family stories, collecting data and measuring results to get the best stories written, produced and promoted.
  • Editing all materials for brand tone, voice and style as needed on a daily basis.
  • Developing comprehensive stories, content and strategies, in partnership with our Editorial Director, that promote organization-wide goals and connect to our calendar of key (tentpole) moments for cross-channel promotions. 
  • Editing content that represents our brand broadly in market and corporate materials, local campaigns, direct mail and other print and web platforms.
  • Helping to build a diverse story bank that can be shared across the organization and used for the promotion of key (tentpole) and newsworthy (advocacy) moments.
  • Working collaboratively with internal March of Dimes staff like local markets, direct response, project managers, digital and web teams to meet campaign objectives and deadlines.
  • Gathering and distributing the right content, and creating templates to help internal staff do the same.
  • Recognizing and connecting with influencers to address trends that relate to our mission and can be leveraged in our storytelling efforts.
  • Creating an external blog plan and the content to fill it and keep it fresh and relevant, with experience writing in the nonprofit space, choosing platforms and training staff preferred.
  • Writing and editing scripts and speeches that promote our brand as well as our executive voice at conferences, at events and in videos.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor degree in English, Marketing, or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Professional writing, editing and project management experience
  • A motivated leader who is comfortable directing a project as well as taking direction
  • Content writing experience, including working with sources, interviewing and writing stories of a sensitive nature (Our mission is to lead the fight for the health of all moms and babies, so some many of our stories involve pregnancy complications and some involve loss.)
  • Versatile digital writing samples in the health, nonprofit and/or fundraising space, direct storytelling experience preferred
  • Experience with blog creation and blogging platforms
  • Experience creating content calendars
  • Experience writing scripts for events and executive leadership
  • Experience creating and sharing measurable results across digital platforms
  • Ability to juggle multiple assignments at once, including those with direct asks (donate, fundraise, sign up) and those based on brand and mission awareness.
  • Professional experience following brand voice and tone and training the trainers
  • Expertise setting and meeting deadlines and keeping team projects on schedule
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Flexible, adaptable and has a positive attitude
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail
  • Comfortable with a wide range of digital platforms
  • 5-7 years of professional experience
