The PSI Research Ethics Board (REB) is guided by the ethical principles for research involving human participants set forth in the Belmont Report and complies with the US regulations for the protection of human subjects (45 CFR part 46). The PSI REB seeks a Chair to further PSI’s commitment to the protection of its research participants through review of US-regulated and non-US regulated social behavioral research studies.  Regular part-time position (25 hours/month)

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Complete required online training
  • Facilitate trainings, as needed, to PSI colleagues to improve capacity and understanding of research ethics and human subjects research
  • As budget allows, attend conference focusing on research ethics and protection of human subjects to ensure PSI is current with policy changes and other changes in the field
  • Review research / non-research determinations as requested by the REB Senior Technical Advisor
  • Determine level of review for all submissions (Exempt, expedited, continuing review, full board)
  • Conduct review of all submissions submitted to the REB for review to ensure compliance with PSI policies and 45 CFR part 46, including initial reviews, continuing reviews, and modifications
  • In the event of a full-board review, execute the agenda of the full-board meeting, identify conflict of interest for self and REB members, and promote discussion of research protocols’ controverted issues, per the 45 CFR part 46
  • Per PSI Policies and Procedures Manual and 45 CFR part 46, the Chair will review Reportable Events submitted to the REB and report serious Reportable Events to the PSI Board of Directors and applicable federal agencies
  • Collaborates with the REB Senior Technical Advisor to develop new and revise existing policies and procedures related to human subjects research, program research, and research ethics at PSI
  • Collaborate with the REB Senior Technical Advisor to develop new and revise existing forms and workflows related to human subjects research, program research, and research ethics at PSI
  • Primary point of contact is the REB’s Senior Technical Advisor
  • Report to the PSI Board of Directors
Educational Background: 
PhD or Masters in related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience working in human subject protections and/or international social behavioral research
  • Thorough knowledge of the Belmont Report, 45 CFR part 46 / Common rule. Familiar with ICH GCP, UN CIOMS
  • Experience overseeing or implementing social behavioral research with vulnerable populations in an international setting
  • Experience working in or collaborating with international non-government organizations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the REB Senior Technical Advisor, researchers, and board members
  • A strong commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of research participants
  • French / Spanish / Portuguese reading and writing skills are highly valuable
