As Director, Major Giving and Tocqueville, you will serve as a key member of the Major Donor Relations team, reporting directly to the Sr. Director, Major Donor Relations. You will join an experienced group of major gifts professionals who develop, curate and promote key major and planned giving strategies that support the United Way Worldwide network in raising more than $1 billion annually in major gifts. In this important role, you are responsible for driving key performance metrics within United Way, including progress on U.S. Tocqueville Society revenue and membership. Major Donor Relations team members are part of the Investor Relations department, working collectively to build the capacity of the global network of 1,800 local United Ways and secure $4.8 Billion to meet United Way Worldwide’s (UWW) mission.
You will bring demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising and working with high networth individuals (HNWI). Your direct experience with United Way Tocqueville Society and other affinity groups—or equivalent experience—sets you apart. You are innovative and a strong leader who knows how to get things done. You will work closely with other team members as well as cross-functionally to accelerate organizational goals for Tocqueville giving—increasing membership, retention, and lifetime value. Specifically, you will have opportunity to support a newly-formed Bold Play 1 Solutions team including others from throughout the organization. Your role is both internal and network-facing and you will build relationships and interact with more than 400 local United Ways that have local Tocqueville Society programs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION: An individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at a satisfactory level:
- Work in partnership with Sr. Director, Major Donor Relations to develop, strengthen and execute all relevant Tocqueville Society strategies, including Million Dollar Roundtable, throughout the U.S. Network. Provide support to Sr. Director Major Donor Relations and other key executives within UWW and immediate team members.
- Build and manage relationships with local United Ways’ major gifts professionals, including key successful and high potential markets. Inspire and activate local United Way contacts. Provide world-class customer relationship management.
- Assess for improvement and opportunities and provide effective solutions to local United Ways and other internal team members who are working with local United Ways to increase network success in Tocqueville and major giving strategies. Work with all functions within UWW to provide seamless and coordinated relationship with targeted markets.
- Review and analyze key network data to determine and monitor progress on established goals; use data to drive focus on markets with greatest potential to retain current donors and attract new donors through effective stewardship and cultivation strategies. Provide quarterly updates on key activities and progress toward goals. Understand research strategies for qualifying prospects and donors for increased investments.
- Develop content (curate new/refresh existing best practices) for Tocqueville program and create implementation guidebooks and other resource materials; consider audience, including major gifts professionals, chief professional officers and board-level volunteers; keep website content relevant.

- Develop and manage key elements of network-wide major gifts trainings and conferences in collaboration with other UWW teams. Provide training or support for trainings; at other times, secure others to provide training. Create conference presentations and webinars on Tocqueville strategies and major gifts.
- Develop, manage and help coordinate events designed to cultivate and steward major donors to local United Ways as well as to United Way Worldwide. Work in partnership with other team members and UWW departments to support successful execution.
- Develop and manage reestablishment of national Tocqueville Society including recognition and key communication strategies to strengthen cultivation and stewardship outcomes. Work cross-functionally to secure development of digital strategy to ensure comprehensive, year-round and sustainable communications practices and content as well as to develop acquisition and retention practices for Tocqueville giving within GCL companies.
- Develop and execute strategy in partnership with Sr. Director, Major Donor Relations to elevate visibility and recognition of the two key groups: 1) Major and Planned Giving Council (MPGC), a network advisory group of highly-skilled major gift professionals, and 2) U.S. Committee of the UWW Leadership Council (with a focus on Tocqueville), a high-level volunteer advisory group of HNWIs and key donors to United Way. Develop regular information updates, emails and correspondence; set meetings and build agendas; plan in-person gatherings, etc.
- Other duties as assigned. Above duties may be emphasized differently as needed based on skill set and competencies of Major Donor Relations team and established goals.

REQUIREMENTS:
This position is critical to the organization’s overall success and supports a renewed focus on Tocqueville and major giving with the U.S. Network. Creative in thought, able to work independently and with minimum supervision.
- This position requires three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a leadership role.
- 3-6+ years of experience managing a high net worth individual (HNWI) donor network; must include advance-level fundraising and HNWI donor and relationship management experience
- Experience with United Ways including working with volunteer structures such as a Tocqueville or Campaign Cabinet or equivalent experience
- 20% – 30% travel is expected with potential for increased travel over time
PREFERRED:
- In-depth knowledge of major giving strategies, including: prospect identification, cultivation, stewardship and recognition strategies; demonstrated moves management and customer relationship management experience;
- Experience co-creating aligned investment solutions for current and prospective donors
- Strong understanding of full service United Way(s) through direct work experience, specifically, managing high-level volunteer and peer-to-peer asks through Tocqueville Cabinet
