The Staff Physician – Abortion Services contract position is located in Austin, TX providing comprehensive reproductive health care services to patients at Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas (PPGT). Works as part of the medical team in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Vice President of Health Services, VP of Medical Compliance, Regional Health Center Managers/Directors, and other team members to provide abortion services and care as outlined in affiliate protocols.
- Provide pre-operative physical examination and assessment of the abortion client and performance of the abortion procedure in accordance with PPGT’s abortion protocol and optimal evidence-based practice guidelines for women seeking services up to the legal limit of gestation.
- Supervise provision of mild and moderate sedation by licensed affiliate staff to clients receiving abortion services.
- Manage immediate abortion complications and consult with abortion staff members regarding possible complications.
- Provide client notification and explanation in the case of procedure deferral, abortion complication, and referral for evaluation of medical condition, etc.
- Evaluate and manage post-abortion clients for possible delayed or long-term complications, even if the initial procedure was performed by another Planned Parenthood physician.
- Provide telephone consultation for after hour calls on patients seen by physician and other PPGT physician colleagues, as needed.
- Ascertain that consent has been obtained and that all of the patient's questions have been answered satisfactorily prior to performance of the procedure.
- Contributes to achieving health center productivity goals.
- Assist in the training and continuing education of staff including, but not limited to, ultrasound and POC evaluation.
- Review Quality Assurance program audit results and provide feedback based on audit findings.
- Authorized to dispense all required and indicated medications, as stipulated by PPGT’s Abortion Protocol, to provide safe and quality medical care.
- Comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, and follow all PPGT policies and procedures adopted in accordance with such laws and regulations.
- May assist in development of PPGT medical standards and guidelines for abortion and other surgical services training and mentoring of staff regarding those protocols.
- Provide education, training and mentoring of medical and nursing trainees on rotation at PPGT, with academic title at the discretion of such training programs.
- May provide additional family planning and surgical services (e.g., MD clinic, colposcopy and other gynecological services) to PPGT patients, as requested by PPGT.

- Possess a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas issued by the Texas Medical Board, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.
- Possess all appropriate certifications, registrations, and approvals from the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, the Texas Department of Public Safety and any other applicable federal or state agency necessary to prescribe and dispense drugs under applicable federal and state laws and regulations in each case without restriction.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the necessary certifications in accordance with compliance requirements.
- Possess hospital admitting privileges in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Experience in abortion care desired.
- Eligible to maintain professional liability insurance coverage
- Agency standards: Must have excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet.
