Deputy Executive Director – Development and Operations
Treatment Action Group (TAG) is an independent, activist and community-based research and policy think tank fighting for better treatment, prevention, a vaccine, and a cure for HIV, tuberculosis, and hepatitis C virus.
TAG seeks a Deputy Executive Director for Development and Operations who will report directly to and work closely with the Executive Director, the senior staff, the administrator, other staff and consultants, and the Board of Directors and its committees.

Deputy Executive Director – Development and Operations
Key Responsibilities:
- Hire and directly supervise a finance manager to oversee and implement TAG’s financial budgeting and reporting cycle, including budgeting, analyzing monthly financial reports, grant budget and compliance requirements, evaluating and negotiating with vendors and supervising external contracts and grants;
- With the executive director, finance manager, and with input from the treasurer and finance committee, oversee and manage financial information flows among the board, executive director, and relevant staff;
- Manage the annual audit performed by external accounting firm;
- Work with executive director and the development committee to devise and oversee the organization’s development plan and calendar and assume primary responsibility for driving its implementation, including the hiring in January 2018 of a development director;
- Work with the executive director and other relevant staff to develop funding proposals for private, corporate, and foundation support; work with the Executive Director, development director, Board, and development committee to identify prospective new funding targets; track funding proposal submissions and outcomes; conduct routine grants administration;
- Work with the communications team to oversee the production of TAG direct mail appeals, other donor publications, newsletters and the annual report;
- Oversee functionality and efficiency of organization’s internet and telecommunications infrastructure; research, implement, and maintain internet technology security protocols;
- Manage memoranda of understanding and contracts with donors and outside vendors including proofreaders, designers, printers and mailhouses; and ensure deadlines are met;
- Directly supervise the TAG office manager/administrator;
- Lead human resource functions for TAG, including posting of new positions and hiring of staff; periodically reviewing internal organizational and human resources processes; initiating and implementing improvements in these processes, and designing new processes as needed; ensure maintenance of required documentation for staff benefits, including health insurance, and maintain updated staff manual;
- Lead and oversee renewals of the organization’s insurance policies, staff policy and procedures manual, and other standard operation procedures;
- Assume leadership of the organization when the Executive Director is absent or unavailable; coordinate among the board and staff; manage staff; and ensure smooth operation of the organization;
- Assist Executive Director with special projects as needed.
Deputy Executive Director – Development and Operations
Qualifications:
- Extensive experience and expertise in non-profit financial administration, development activities and grants management;
- Excellent financial skills including experience developing and implementing budgets;
- Excellent verbal and written communication, organization, prioritization, and follow up skills;
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience highly desirable; advanced degree in management, development, or administration preferred;
- Experience managing multiple projects; ability to work effectively with staff members and supervisors who are often traveling or located away from the office;
- Knowledge of employee benefits and human resource issues;
- Intellectual curiosity and ability to quickly grasp complex concepts;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Access and Excel; Quickbooks; and project management and customer relations management software (Salsa Labs experience and expertise would be ideal);
- Ability to work well as a member of a team;
- Strong passion for HIV, tuberculosis, and HCV research and treatment advocacy.
