The President/CEO is the leader of the organization. The President/CEO is the Chief Mobilizer and Motivator; s/he leverages the power of relationships and networks, and works across private, public and corporate sectors to improve conditions in the community. The President/CEO possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for the organization. The President/CEO is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good — creating, resourcing, scaling and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact. S/he is responsible for building trust in United Way and its relevance in the community. S/he values network and strives to leverage United Way's breadth of community presence, relationships, and strategy.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The major responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Community Impact

  • The President/CEO is responsible for the overall impact of United Way of Northwest Michigan on the community. The President works closely with the Board to craft and adapt the strategy to achieve this impact, including raising the funds to support it. S/he will establish and build relationships with top leaders in the community, including those representing the highest levels in business, government and non-profit sectors.

Resource Development

  • The President/CEO is charged to drive key results in fundraising; to identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors and key leaders of prospective new corporate partners; to leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into fundraising opportunities; and to promote a culture of fundraising in the organization, both at the staff and board level.

Strategic Management

  • The President/CEO serves as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and gives strong direction in policy formulation and interpretation. S/he partners with the Board of Directors and the United Way of Northwest Michigan leadership to craft organizational goals and develops strategies to ensure that they are achieved. S/he ensures coordination and alignment of all United Way activities to strategic direction in the areas of community impact, resource development, and staff alignment.

Organization Management

  • The President/CEO is accountable for building and leading high-performing teams, ensuring all teams are aligned and collaborating to achieve organizational results. S/he maintains accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within policies set by the Board of Directors. The President/CEO assesses organizational capacity to implement strategies and identify gaps in systems and staffing; directly supervises staff positions and establishes individual goals; works Board’s Finance Committee  to manage organizational spending, monitor budget compliance, and mitigate financial risks; and ensures that United Way of Northwest Michigan’s goals of inclusiveness and diversity among staff and volunteers are met.

Job Tasks and Responsibilities

Resource Development 

  • Supervise and increase United Way annual fundraising campaign.
  • Organize and develop resources necessary to provide an effective, successful campaign.
  • Direct and coordinate staff in implementation of the campaign plan.
  •  Supervise the preparation of all campaign reports.
  • Evaluate campaign outcome and make future adjustments to improve the future campaign process.
  • Develop and implement a strategy for securing major and planned gifts.

Management/Operations

  • Implement directives as assigned by the United Way of Northwest Michigan Board of Directors.
  • Make recommendations to the United Way of Northwest Michigan Board of Directors and take action on all policies and procedures as outlined in organization policies.
  • Responsible for supervision, monitoring work performance, motivating, maintaining productivity and discharging United Way of Northwest Michigan staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Maintain all compliance issues related to federal, state and local employment laws.
  • Oversee and administer all employee health, life and retirement benefits.  Report all necessary changes to the Board of Directors.
  • Manage all financial responsibilities within budget requirements as set by the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for management information/data systems utilized by the United Way of Northwest Michigan.
  • Responsible for meeting all standards of membership with United Way Worldwide.
  • Prepare meeting agendas in cooperation with the President of the Board of Directors and/or the committee chairperson.
  • Prepare annual budget and prepare and submit periodic financial reports to the Board.
  • Work cooperatively with the Board to implement the 2013 5-year master plan.
  • Assist in recommending/recruiting volunteers for the Board of Directors and committees.
  • Assist in development, training, retention, assignment and discharge of Board of Director members.
  • Keep Board of Directors apprised of all necessary recommendations and changes regarding compliance issues related to federal, state and local laws.
  • Keep Board of Directors apprised of overall operational, staff and facility changes.

Community Impact

  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of United Way volunteer initiatives, including but not limited to:
  • Volunteer Center
  • Retired and Senior Volunteer Program
  • Direct all efforts to achieve a comprehensive resource development program for United Way volunteer initiatives.
  • Enhance the grant making process
  • Supervise all staff and procedures related to the process for making grants from the community fund.
  • Communicate grant making process to community.
  • Develop strategies for quantifying impact of community grants.
  • Enhance the brand and reputation of United Way
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and effective relationship with businesses, organizations, community, individuals and organized labor.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with community institutions, media, organizations and agencies.
  • Provide ongoing leadership to community strategic planning and goal setting efforts.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor degree with related experience. Master’s Degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 10 years’ experience.  Prior United Way experience beneficial.

  • Ability to formulate complex and comprehensive materials such as legal documents, authoritative reports, official publications of major scope and impact.

Physical requirements for this position include: hearing, seeing, speaking, feeling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive motions.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range: $67K - $80K - commensurate with experience
