The Medical Affairs Nurse Specialist II role is a key contributor to the mission by assisting the Medical Affairs team in developing medical eligibility, outreach and referral strategies for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and its chapters. The specialist also assists when needed, with nationwide program and policy initiatives to ensure consistency, brand integrity and child focus in the organization’s medical eligibility efforts.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Works directly in the Intake and Medical Eligibility (IME) module of the Wish & Volunteer Center to determine eligibility of referrals. Escalates the most difficult cases to the national Medical Advisory Council after collaborating with the Director of Medical Affairs.
- Provides first-level triage for chapter inquiries related to medical affairs, referring the most complex cases to the Director of Medical Affairs.
- Collaborates with Medical Affairs, Chapter Advancement and Information Technology to enhance, refine, and modify IME as needed.
- Supports the development and execution of a national medical outreach plan, in collaboration with the Director of Medical Affairs, Chapter Advancement team, chapters and Brand Advancement.
- Guides and provides leadership to chapters for medical eligibility and referrals.
- Develops and delivers trainings on medical topics to department members, chapters, families and external referral sources.
- Develops and manages projects with consideration to timelines, resources, budget and key stakeholders.
- Searches current literature for relevant data to the mission and current projects.
- Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.
Educational Background:
Associates degree in nursing required; Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred; Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants with pediatric expertise also considered.
Skills/Experience:
- Demonstrated knowledge of pediatric healthcare, medical conditions, and healthcare systems.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments with competing priorities.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Understanding of adult learning concepts and building education materials.
- Strong ‘listening to understand’ skills.
- Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive information.
- Demonstrated consultation, collaboration, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to navigate a large organizational structure via formal and informal routes as applicable.
- 5 – 7 years of professional work experience in pediatrics with knowledge of cardiac, respiratory and neurological conditions essential. Experience and knowledge of children with chronic medical conditions, genetic and syndromic conditions helpful.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications helpful.
