The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Director, Research and Bioinformatics based out of our National Center office located in Dallas, TX!

This individual will lead research efforts related to The American Heart Association (AHA) registry portfolio. AHA registries capture comprehensvie inpatient hospitilization data on a variety of conditions with more than 7 million records from 2,400 hospitals. Leverage AHA clinical registry assets for novel research and discovery, with a focus on building an in-house analytic team and expanding the application of AHA’s registry infrastructure and real-world data, in clinical trials. Oversee internal and external analytic efforts for AHA registry programs, including data governance, data audit and statistical analysis for research and publication. Manage research pipeline, including working with volunteer thought leaders to set research priorities, overseeing proposal approval process, and shepherding research concepts through analysis and publication. Manage thrid party analytic vendor relationships including contract negotiations and accountability of deliverables. Identify and secure research and trial opportunities in public and private sector. Oversee ongoing and new trials, including trial design, site selection, site recruitment, patient recruitment, safety and compliance. Advise technical teams and vendors on enhancements to registry software and infrastructure to support clinical trials. Create and manage multiple projects across disease states, working effectively with other internal AHA departments, to include Science, Research, Legal, Development, Advocacy and our quality initiatives including Health IT, Inpatient and Ambulatory programs. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of cardiovascular disease and stroke, experience managing and working with large data sets, statistical expertise including ability to code in SAS and R, clinical research experience (academic or industry) and knowledge of associated regulations. This role will regularly liaise with volunteer and industry thought leaders as well as work cross functionally with AHA teams. Strong though leadership, executive presence and exceptional communication are required.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversee in-house analysis of registry data to support research and publication, grants and other projects as needed
  • Manage thrid party analytic vendor relationships including contract negotiations and accountability of deliverables
  • Develop new relationships with academic and industry partners to expand the use of AHA data sets
  • Oversee internal and external analytic efforts for AHA registry programs, including data governance, data audit and statistical analysis for research and publication. Manage research pipeline, including working with volunteer thought leaders to set research priorities, overseeing proposal approval process, and shepherding research concepts through analysis and publication. Support the development and execution of a data strategy, including strategic growth opportunities, communication and outreach and emerging areas
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for prosepective research projects where the AHA registry infrastructre can be used for prospective data collection
  • Negotiate clincial data and research contracts with external parties in partnership with AHA legal and development teams
  • Lead efforts to improve communication with stakeholders, volunteers and industry to increase understanding of AHA data sets and their application in clincial research
Educational Background: 
Advanced Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five (5) to eight (8) years of relevant experience
  • A minimum of recent 7 years’ experience in clinical research
  • Experience in analyzing clinical data sets for publication in peer review journals.
  • Coding in SAS or R
  • Experience running clinical trials
  • Ability to gather, analyze and interpret relevant data and use interpretations in the development of solution-oriented problem solving and business planning
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects
  • Must have excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to travel up to 30% local and overnight stay

Preferred Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex relationships with external partners and allied organizations
  • Knowledge of voluntary health organizations and experience in group process with the ability to resolve conflicts and gain consensus through mediation and collaboration highly desirable
