The Director of Community Impact is responsible for the planning, development, management and implementation of strategies to achieve the Community Impact work of United Way.  This includes direction of planning, community initiatives, fund distribution, and agency services. Responsible for assessing community needs, assuring accountability, achieving community impact through the effective utilization of community resources. Develops and manages a multi-disciplinary team that makes up the Community Impact Committee and Impact Councils. Responsible for development and oversight of regular allocation budgets for Community Impact Councils and other special funds.  Provides direction and leadership for outcome identification measurement, reporting and analysis at the program and community level. Leads United Way initiatives and programs with management and funding.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop and implement community investment strategies in accordance with the organization’s goals and priorities
  • Manage and implement all allocations and fund distribution processes as they relate to meeting the goals of the organization.
  • Supervise Community Impact Councils in their analysis of community need, agency performance and investment strategies.
  • Provide staff support for United Way volunteers, including members of the Board of Directors.
  • Manage and supervise all planning activities and volunteer training for the review process, including financial review, outcome review, site visits and application/proposal process.
  • Develop and maintain the system for gathering and reviewing information on the status and needs of programs and agencies, including budget review, audit analysis, and review/approval of supplemental fund raising activities.
  • Collect and analyze appropriate quantitative (e.g. demographic and problem incidence data) and qualitative data (e.g. interviews and focus groups) to formulate an initial issue assessment, understand the current environment, identify emerging trends, and gather other information to inform United Way’s Bold Goals and objectives.
  • Provide leadership and consultation in the measurement of outcomes, the prioritization of community indicators and the review of agency use of information.
  • Represent United Way of Fairfield County in collaborative efforts with government, other non-profits and business as assigned.
  • Works as part of the United Way team by participating in and supporting campaign, marketing, technology and administrative functions as necessary. 
  • Coordinate with and support communications, marketing and campaign efforts of the United Way of Fairfield County in meeting organizational objectives.
  • Manage and supervise United Way led initiatives and programming in the areas of Education, Income & Health.
  • Lead funding initiatives for United Way led initiatives and programming through primarily sponsorships and grants.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities, as required.
Educational Background: 
Undergraduate degree from a four-year college with major course emphasis in social work, human services, liberal arts or related fields, or any equivalent combination; Master’s degree desirable.

  • Strategic Management:   Helps provide oversight and monitoring of the organizational strategic plan, including the development of community bold goals.  Seeks and shares knowledge of community. Takes a collaborative approach to addressing issues. Mobilizes a broad range of sectors and resources
  • Community Impact:  Responsible for the overall impact of the Fairfield County community, with emphasis on increasing its capacity to lead the setting of priorities and measuring impact.  Determine strategies for meeting goals, allocate resources according to priorities, and leverage resources available.
  • Communication Skills:  Communicates in an open, candid and consistent manner; delivers information effectively in a variety of settings including one-on-one, team settings, and diverse group presentations or meetings.  Delivers information effectively in a variety of formats including letters, memos, analytical reports, grant proposals, and presentations.
  • Manage Relationships:  Is able to communicate effectively to develop, grow, and sustain productive relationships.  Understands and motivates individuals and organizations and places a high value on diversity and inclusion.
  • Achieve Results:  Is personally accountable for the results they achieve. Is able to adapt quickly to ever- changing environments. Is organized, able to plan, think strategically, and is creative, innovative, and appropriately persistent. Is able to make decisions and willing to take risks when appropriate to achieve results and meet goals.  Has a focus on results and can effectively communicate goals and impact.  Advocates for support of education, income, and health.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and financial reports.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate diverse volunteer groups, work independently, develop and present new ideas. Proven organizational, written, verbal and creative skills.
  • Demonstrated personal computer skills with MS Office applications and other common software applications.
  • Acceptable work ethics, professional conduct and appearance, reflecting United Way’s image and values.
  • Ability to motivate and retain volunteers, match interests and work with all people.
  • Good understanding of group dynamics and group facilitation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and balance competing demands. 
  • United Way experience and grant making experience preferred. 
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule with the possibility of some early morning, evening, and weekend work.
