National Executive Lead Principal Gifts

The American Heart Association has a great opportunity for a National Executive Lead Principal Gifts based out of our National Center office. This individual will be responsible for the qualification, cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of new or existing principal gift donors while connecting and engaging the donor in the AHA mission. Responsible for being a subject matter expert on the American Heart Association’s restricted fundraising programs and for securing donations of $5,000,000 or more while moving donors to their highest level of commitment and involvement. Other responsibilities include:

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Complete minimum of 50 face-to-face donor and prospective donor visits each fiscal year to develop and manage an individual portfolio of approximately 20 individual donors across the nation with the ability to give $5M or more. Curate portfolio through discussions with the National Vice President, Principal and Individual Giving. Achieves total gifts between $5 million and $10 million annually from individual donors through a variety of giving mechanisms including but not limited to outright, stock, family foundation, deferred mechanisms, planned gift mechanisms, etc.
  • Lead and conduct solicitation of 9-12 seven and eight figure gifts annually for restricted and unrestricted purposes
  • Supervise and develop Principal Gifts Writer. Lead processes and procedures to ensure top level proposals and donor stewardship reports are executed by securing appropriate project information inclusive of budgets, as well as creating templates for offers, proposals and asks that will be used to secure gifts
  • Collaborate with National Executive Leads, Individual Giving and National Executive Lead, Giving Societies on strategies and opportunities to identify, cultivate and solicit principal gift prospects to support field events and initiatives. Be a resource and leader in forming transformational donor relationships across the country
  • Participate in training activities and work with other Team members to develop programs and strategies to advance the Principal Gifts effort
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all activities in donor database (BBCRM). Report activity, trends, progress and results to Vice President, Principal Gifts, association-wide Donor Relations team, or other various internal audiences on a monthly basis
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Eight (8) years of experience in fundraising or sales with at least one year focused on major gifts or large accounts, preferably supporting large scale research on health and/or community issues
  • Eight (8) years of experience in identifying and developing major giving and/or engagement opportunities that align with organizational mission, goals and strategies at national and local levels
  • Six (6) years of experience working with complex donors or clients representing $1 million in revenue or philanthropy with proven fundraising or sales results at the six- and seven-figure level
  • Six (6) years of experience with all areas of cultivation, solicitation and closing sales or fundraising
  • Demonstrated collaborative skills with all levels of staff, prospects, volunteers and donors
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
  • Comprehensive skills in donor relationship management software, such as BBCRM, Blackbaud, Dynamics and/or Raiser’s Edge
  • Ability to travel up to 40% local and overnight stay
