The Director, International Network Financial & Membership Accountability will set financial and membership accountability policies through United Way Worldwide’s Membership Accountability Committee. While coordinating annual reviews of international United Ways’ compliance with membership requirements, this position will also develop and implement a process to monitor the financial well-being of international United Ways. In addition, this position will provide technical assistance and training on an ongoing basis and, as needed, lead targeted interventions to effectively manage risk across United Way Worldwide’s International Network.
Monitoring and Enforcement
- Financials
- Develop and manage a process to periodically monitor the revenues and expenses of international United Ways to detect early warning signs of financial instability.
- Engage at-risk United Ways to better understand their financial situation, diagnose related problems, and devise solutions to help ensure the organizations’ financial well-being and sustainability.
- In coordination with Finance and International Network, ensure annual dues are billed and collected in a timely fashion from all international United Ways.
- Membership Requirements
- In partnership with the International Network, lead the annual membership certification process for international United Ways, providing guidance along with enforcement to ensure compliance with membership requirements.
- Spearhead the investigation of alleged violations of membership requirements and any interventions that are necessary to address same.
- Report investigation findings to the United Way Worldwide Membership Accountability Committee (see below) and seek their input on/approval of corrective action plans as needed.
- Committee
- Staff the United Way Worldwide Membership Accountability Committee. The Committee meets on a quarterly basis and occasionally holds special calls.
- Scheduling and facilitation of meetings/calls.
- Development of meeting materials.
- Maintenance of Minutes.
- Establish policies and procedures for the International Network.
- Assist in the resolution of any disputes among international United Ways.
- Staff the United Way Worldwide Membership Accountability Committee. The Committee meets on a quarterly basis and occasionally holds special calls.
Support and Training
- Assessment
- Based on findings from expense-revenue and membership compliance analyses, assess international United Ways’ challenges and address them through training. This will include building the capacity of United Way Worldwide’s Regional Teams to address financial and membership challenges.
- Materials Creation and Training
- Participate in creation and dissemination of standards, guides, and tools that assist international United Ways in the adoption of operational best practices and compliance with membership requirements. This includes related orientation for Board Members of new United Ways.
- Support
- Provide national/HQ office of international United Ways with advice and support in development of: (1) their own financial oversight, and (2) membership accountability functions relative to the local United Ways in their country.
Other
- Other duties and/or special projects as directed by the Vice President, International Network Engagement & Performance.
- Five years of progressive management-level experience, ideally in a membership-based federation.
- Familiarity or experience with United Way a plus.
- Technically speaking, candidate should possess strong financial acumen, operational know-how, a solid understanding of governance matters, and experience formulating /implementing policy.
- This position requires working with people and organizations inside outside of the United States.
