The primary role of the Director, Disaster Services will be to work with targeted United Ways around the U.S. in high-risk natural disaster areas (e.g., hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, tornadoes, etc.) to ensure the United Ways have viable disaster response plans in place. This person will also be responsible for traveling to areas hit by natural disaster to provide on-the-ground support to responding United Ways. This person also assists with the management of daily work activities related to Disaster and Crisis support within the Network Engagement & Performance Team as needed. This is a temporary 18-month position.

Areas of Responsibility: 

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at a satisfactory level:

  • Support local United Ways in creating disaster response plans.
  • Create and refine key disaster support materials (including for man-made disaster such as mass shootings) and codify lessons learned from affected communities.
  • Communicate disaster information to the United Way Network, including hosting webinars and conference calls to educate Local United Ways.
  • Assist the United Way Worldwide Core Crisis Team as needed.
  • Travel with minimum notice to local United Ways in disaster-affected areas
  • In times of disaster, activate the crisis/disaster protocols.
  • Coordinate with 2-1-1, volunteer engagement, marketing and communications, and national/global partners.
  • Assist in managing the logistics around disaster-related funds. Liaise with Finance Group to establish funds and create donor reporting templates, liaise with Impact Team to capture outcomes and/or improve reporting platform, liaise with Investor Relations Group to share outcomes with donors.
  • Track and report on project outcomes.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Three to five years of progressive experience in a similar role--ideally in the disaster response field or communications field.
  • Advanced technical/functional knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Knowledge of the disaster response field.
  • Understanding, experience, and proven success in leading a national or regional program or initiative and in building a state and/or national policy or program.
  • Excellent partnership, coalition building, and facilitation skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage a project team, multiple priorities, and build multi-sector partnerships.
