Responsible for overall management, direction, and execution of all fundraising, grant writing, communication, marketing, planning, fund distribution, community problem solving, and administrative activities of the United Way. Plans, organizes, manages, and directs all efforts of the organization, including those of United Way in its role as a community impact and fundraising organization and in its role as the homeless coalition lead agency, Homeless Management Information System lead agency, and homeless service provider. Works with the Board of Directors, donors, community and corporate leaders, community partners, staff and volunteers to identify, understand and act on the issues which enable the United Way to accomplish its vision and mission.  Provides leadership and support to volunteers in carrying out the plans and policies of United Way of Suwannee Valley as established by the Board of Directors.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Development and Management of Community Fundraising Resources:

  • Prepare for the annual community fundraising campaign, including but not limited to, generating text for the campaign brochure, generating copy for the video and public service announcements; overseeing staff efforts relative to revisions and printing of pledge forms, envelopes, etc.; working with volunteer campaign team leadership on committee cultivation and meeting planning.
  • Manages the annual United Way community fundraising campaign to generate the maximum financial support.  This includes management and oversight of the campaign season events, volunteer campaign team development, communications, and recognition.
  • Continually search for the most effective means to broaden community awareness and understanding of United Way.
  • Provide a year-round program of information, education, and marketing to generate the broadest possible positive support for United Way.
  • Assess public attitude toward the organization.
  • Conduct fundraising campaign efforts, including but not limited to, conducting workplace campaign meetings; conducting or participating in CEO visits; generating or reviewing communications to donors/potential donors and volunteers.
  • Provide progress reports in a timely manner during the campaign.
  • Causes to be published all material necessary for the development and training of volunteers, fundraising and reporting to the general membership on the financial position of the United Way.
  • Generate, utilizing staff expertise, as appropriate, grant applications in support of community impact initiatives, building fund, and general revenue.
  • Provide management and oversight of the distribution of funds available for support of funded agencies. Coordinate the process of agency evaluation to ensure agencies utilize funds as prescribed. Attract the highest level of volunteers to this function to ensure the highest level of integrity and quality or the citizen review process.
  • Demonstrate stewardship and accountability for financial and facility resources.
  • Ensure the organization’s technology is sufficient in a highly competitive fundraising environment.

Community Leadership:

  • Leads the interaction with the community in accordance with United Way Worldwide expectations and the United Way of Suwannee Valley Strategic Plan and Marketing Plan.
  • In coordination with volunteer leadership, plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates United Way community impact initiatives.
  • Cultivates and develops cooperative relationships among public, private, and voluntary groups, such as service providers, funding sources, planning bodies, business, and other community groups, to plan for, fund, and implement effective human services to meet community needs.
  • Serves as a spokesperson for the organization on relevant issues.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to United Way values through a stewardship role in a community process in which people of diverse backgrounds shape together a vision of mobilizing our community to improve lives.

Organizational Leadership:

  • Establishes the organizational work plan as well as the board’s role and the procedures necessary for effectively operating the United Way.
  • Consults with the board president or committee chairs to prepare meeting schedules, agendas, reports and minutes of meetings.
  • Maintains the business and financial affairs of United Way in accordance with all acceptable standards of business and regulatory agencies.
  • Participates on the Finance Committee and consults with the treasurer in the provision of financial reports, budgets, and investments.
  • Ensures integration of effective and efficient support systems in areas such as staff and volunteer training, procurement, personnel management, building management, and information management.
  • Provides for the establishment of necessary lists of volunteers at every level, potential board members and committee chairs, agency staff and board members, service clubs, and governmental departments relating to human services.
  • Obtains and develops competent staff to carry out defined roles and work assignments.
  • Reviews and approves, as appropriate, all purchase requisitions, travel expenses, employee time sheets, vendor invoices, and other expenditures. Reviews and co-signs checks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Organizational Leadership specific to Homeless Coalition:

  • Serve in the leadership position of United Way of Suwannee Valley as the homeless coalition lead agency, executive director of the homeless coalition, and HMIS lead agency.
  • Attend and participate in all relevant homeless coalition meetings, providing appropriate leadership support.
  • Interact with the various organizations funding homeless coalition efforts and/or United Way of Suwannee Valley homeless services not directly related to the coalition.  These include but are not limited to the U.S. Department of HUD, the Florida Department of Children and Families Office on Homelessness, and LSF Health Systems.
  • Utilizing appropriate staff support, generate the grants submitted by United Way of Suwannee Valley in its role as the lead agency and, therefore, collaborative applicant. These include but are not limited to the HUD CoC collaborative application and the applications for the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), Homeless Prevention Grant, State of Florida Challenge Grant.  Additionally, submit grant applications for those grants secured directly by United Way, including the PATH grant secured through LSF Health Systems.
  • Generate all budgets necessary for the grants and resulting from funds received. Monitor, utilizing reporting from the business manager, expenditures against grant budgets.
  • Provide oversight for United Way’s role for contract management to sub-grantees of ESG and Challenge Grant funds, including the negotiation of sub-grant agreements, monthly reporting, and accounting of funds expended/received.
  • Negotiate all contracts resulting from all above-referenced grant applications.
  • Provide all necessary training, guidance, and oversight for the implementation of the grants implemented by United Way and for the management of the sub-grants resulting from the ESG and Challenge Grant.
  • Coordinate the coalition and/or grant-related funding relative to the personnel and operational budgets.

Disaster Response:

  • Provide oversight for United Way of Suwannee Valley’s role as the Columbia County Emergency Support Function 15 (ESF) role relative to volunteers and donations during an emergency operations center activation.
  • Provide oversight for United Way of Suwannee Valley’s role in support of staffing for the Columbia County Citizens Information Center staffing in anticipation or response to a disaster.
  • Provide oversight in United Way of Suwannee Valley’s support of disaster response activities requested by the counties in United Way’s service area.
  • Provide oversight and participate in the Suwannee Valley Long Term Recovery Committee.
  • Secure grant resources as needed and appropriate in response to disasters and provide for all required grant reporting.
Educational Background: 
Undergraduate degree required, preferably a BS or BA in Business Administration or Public Administration
Skills/Experience: 
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments; strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to develop strong trusting relationships in order to gain support and achieve results.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills; ability to interact at all levels within and outside the organization.
  • Proven track record in grant writing skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and quantitative abilities.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Education and Experience:

  • Training, experience or advanced degree preferred in business or public administration.
  • Ten years of experience at an executive leadership and management level in the for-profit or not-profit sector, including professional or volunteer leadership within the health and human services field.
  • Experience in personnel management/supervision,  budget development and oversight, grant writing, and demonstrated competence in the areas of fund raising, public relations and community problem solving
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be acceptable.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $71,000 to $80,000 per year
