This position works to enhance public perception and awareness of United Way of Alamance County’s mission, vision, and role in the community by developing and implementing effective marketing, public relations, and communication strategies.  Responsible for cultivating and sharing written and digital stories that inspire, motivate and educate our community and encourage people to join us by giving, advocating and volunteering. This position will build key relationships, enhance campaign results, and effectively promote and communicate the work of the organization through their efforts. Strong writing, multimedia, and social media skills are essential for this position.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Marketing/Public Relations:

  • Develop a marketing plan for effective public information and communication efforts to create consistency and year-round high visibility for United Way of Alamance County. Major categories of marketing include:
    • General marketing: brochures, billboards, newsletters, etc.
    • Campaign-specific marketing: Annual Campaign materials, Coordinator Luncheon, etc.
    • Event marketing: Taste of Alamance, etc.
    • Programs-specific marketing: Stamp Out Hunger, etc.
  • Collaborate with Management Team (President, Director of Community Impact, Director of Finance & Administration and Director of Resource Development) to determine, implement, and manage current marketing needs in each respective area. Creative direction, implementation, and management will be the responsibility of the Marketing Coordinator.
  • Assess internal and external resources to support marketing efforts and develop key metrics for evaluating success with Management Team.
  • Maintain a content calendar of marketing and events, including campaign and fundraising events
  • Manage all website updates/maintenance. Work with web services vendor, as needed.
  • Manage all external communication and content across all social media networks (original text, images, video, articles, etc.), website, email, press and other media outlets.
  • Work collaboratively with Management Team to develop consistent messaging that educates and engages our audience across networks.
  • Monitor and analyze social media trends and respond accordingly with our social media strategy and tactics.
  • Use photography, video, and related media to produce relevant content for various audiences.  Develop and maintain an easily accessible assets library for organizational use.
  • Write or ghost-write blog posts, editorials, letters to the editor, articles, etc. and submit to appropriate media outlets with Management Team’s  approval when necessary. Secure media interviews.
  • Design layout and coordinate production of printed materials such as brochures, newsletters, posters, annual report and print ads.
  • Maintain a full understanding of all aspects of United Way of Alamance County’s work in order to clearly market the organization.  Develop and implement new communication techniques to meet changing markets and newly developed company cultures, including electronic pledges, mobile giving, social media giving, and similar platforms.
  • Follow and implement current marketing trends both within and out of UW networks by attending UW-specific and other trainings/continuing education.

Event Management:

  • Facilitate organizational event planning efforts from creative concept development to final execution in coordination with the President, Director of Finance and Administration, and Director of Resource Development for United Way events, including but not limited to: Fall Community Event, Taste of Alamance, and others as needed.
  • Provide logistical and marketing support for campaign events, such as United Way Day, Auto Rally, Campaign Coordinator Luncheon, Spirit of Alamance, Women United, and Tocqueville, with direction of Director of Resource Development.
  • Responsible for all event implementation and evaluation, including but not limited to: setting budgets (with Director of Finance & Administration), venue, entertainment, and all other booking, logistics, permits and insurance (when required), recruitment of volunteers, signage, promotion and marketing, and other details when necessary.
  • Manage event debriefs and post-event communications, including surveys, thank you communications, lessons learned, and other functions as appropriate.
  • Work closely with President, Director of Finance and Administration, and Director of Resource Development to create annual and event-specific sponsorship packages and identify partnership opportunities with organizations and companies based on their philanthropic interests and UW event needs.
  • Develop event scripts and ensure all printed and online materials (i.e. save the date, invite, program, website, email signature lines, and social media) are brand-compliant and that proper promotional efforts have taken place (i.e. PSA’s, newspaper ads, press releases, and social media efforts).
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in related field with a minimum 3-5 years experience preferred, including marketing, public relations and project management
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Proficiency in Illustrator, In-Design and WordPress website management programs, multiple social media platforms, strong PC Skills: Microsoft Office, Google Applications

Other Requirements:

  • Relationships: It is critical that this position work well with a variety of people.  Internal relationships involve working in close partnership with the United Way President and other United Way employees.  External relationships include the general public and serving as a liaison with area non-profit agencies, businesses, and individual donors and volunteers.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $31,000 to $40,000 per year
