The Oshkosh area is home to about 100,000 people and many small to medium size companies as well as Oshkosh Corp and Bemis, and the UW-Oshkosh. With an annual fundraising campaign of roughly $1.2 million dollars, OAUW is poised to grow its campaign to $2.5 million + over the next five years, to create even greater impact for the Oshkosh area through building stronger collaborative partnerships with private, non-profit, and public leaders.
The Oshkosh Area United Way has a current staff of three, with the opportunity to build a dedicated team to drive marketing and the annual fundraising campaign, along with increasing the base of committed volunteers.
The successful candidate for Chief Executive Officer will be a mission-driven, collaborative and innovative leader and manager. This individual will serve as the brand ambassador and champion to the Oshkosh Area United Way in the community, which includes connecting with a constituency of givers, recipients of services, individuals, associations, agencies, education partners, government, businesses and other institutions. The CEO will leverage the power of relationships and networks, working across private, public and corporate sectors to improve conditions in the community. This leader will possess a high level of broad business skills, financial acumen, and strategic management expertise to effectively retool the campaign process to generate resources and financial support for the organization. The CEO will be a driver of change, open to technology and new ideas. As chief spokesperson, the CEO will insure that Oshkosh Area United Way, its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented in a positive, collaborative manner.
Strategic Management
- Commitment to United Way’s mission and values, including the ability to build relationships internally and with other United Ways, United Way Wisconsin, state and local governments, education, nonprofit and private sector organizations.
- Oversight of the strategic plan and the planning process to identify future direction for the organization and the community.
- Lead the development, implementation, and execution of the annual operational plan and manage the progress.
- Leverage and coordinate resources to ensure strategic alignment in the areas of community impact, resource development, and staff alignment.
- Serve as the principal resource and support to the Board of Directors and its key committees, while providing input in policy formulation and interpretation.
- Collaborate with the Board Management Committee in the development of an effective and motivated board, and continued engagement by Board members.
Community Impact
- Responsible for the overall impact of OAUW in the community, with emphasis on increasing its capacity to set priorities and measure impact of social change.
- Provide strategic and long-term visioning consistent with the direction set in partnership with the Board of Directors.
- With the Allocations and Impact Committee, determine objectives and strategies for meeting goals; allocate resources according to priorities, and leverage all resources available to accomplish associated tasks and anticipated obstacles.
Resource Development
- Oversee fundraising planning and implementation, including identifying resource requirements, developing innovative future strategies, researching funding sources, establishing an effective process to approaching funders, submitting proposals and grants, and overseeing fundraising records and documentation.
- With the Resource Development Committee, work toward campaign growth, fundraising successfully within the traditional campaign and planned giving channels, and utilizing newer development methods and opportunities to increase giving.
- Maintain and foster relationships with current individual and corporate donors, and identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors and corporate partners to further develop fundraising opportunities.
Organizational Management
- Build and lead a high-performing team and ensure all team members are aligned and collaborating to achieve organizational results.
- Maintain accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within policies set by the Board of Directors.
- With the Audit/Finance Committee, manage organizational spending, monitor budget compliance, and mitigate financial risk.
- Maintains the role of Secretary for the Board of the Hooper Community Center, which serves as the OAUW office, providing facility and tenant support to serve the non-profit community who use the building.
- Work with the current CEO to insure a smooth transition of leadership responsibilities through the remainder of 2018.
- Ability to successfully work in partnership with organizations and individuals in the community. Demonstrated collaboration and consensus building abilities to bring together a diverse group of constituents, such as a board, staff, agency partners, elected officials, and the larger community.
- Demonstrated success in securing major gifts and leading a comprehensive fundraising campaign, and experience with budgeting. This will include experience with innovative ways to fundraise to new populations within the community.
- A demonstrated record of success in promoting and sustaining efforts to attract and retain a highly qualified staff, board, and committees. Experience must include significant leadership and staff management in a non-profit, for-profit, or government organization. Ensure the right people are in the right roles at the right times.
- A servant leader who is both visible and approachable; portrays integrity, humility, honesty, enthusiasm, sense of humor, resilience, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to create real social change, understanding that improved lives are the end game.
- Experience in working with and/or volunteering for a nonprofit organization.
- Must live in the OAUW service area, which includes the City of Oshkosh and surrounding towns of Black Wolf, Oshkosh, Nekimi, Algoma, Vinland, as well as Omro, Winneconne, and Butte des Morts within a year of taking the position.
