To lead the growth of United Way UK - a young, entrepreneurial charity with exceptional corporate connections and the potential to have a significant long-term impact within communities in the UK.

To ensure the organisation functions within the context of national membership of the largest privately funded charity in the world, United Way Worldwide; operating independently with the local Board and CEO leading on strategy, and the CEO and small team on planning and delivery.

To explore and develop new corporate partnerships and funded projects, meeting growth targets.

To diversify and develop the work of the charity, building on existing relationships, projects, and strategic plans.

To value and drive relationships, and nurture them within all sectors and at all levels, driving collective change at the community level.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Strategy development

  • To review strategy 2018-2022 strategy, develop annual delivery plans and ensure the team, board and systems are equipped to deliver, to measure progress and to identify and take opportunities and corrective action.

Donor relations

To diversify sources of income and increase funding in support of growing national, local and community impact programmes.

  • Manage and supervise the Head of CR Partnerships
  • Ensure existing relationships with donors, corporate partners and key stakeholders are maintained and developed
  • Engage prospective donors and key contacts within prospective corporate partners from all sources, including contacts offered by the Board of Trustees
  • Work with the European team and United Way Worldwide to extend relationships with corporate partners from other parts of the world to the UK
  • Ensure employee engagement offer for corporate partners are further developed, working directly on volunteering and fundraising with employees where necessary
  • Develop innovative proposals to meet the needs of the donor, presenting the community need to them and how the two can intersect.

Reputation building

To increase the brand presence and profile of United Way in the UK.

  • Attend and, where appropriate, host events which present United Way UK as a community impact partner of choice to corporate and major donors.
  • Network with other third sector organisations, with an emphasis on collaboration to achieve impact.

Impact building

To understand the needs of the communities in which we operate and co-develop initiatives with other charitable organisations to help tackle these.

  • Direct to ensure development is relevant to overall strategy, linked to best practice in the network and beyond, and will appeal to donors
  • Remain up-to-date with the work of other organisations and lead on high-level collaboration discussions

Staff & board management

To ensure the staff team is fit for purpose and functioning in allocated roles and responsibilities, providing team building.

  • Manage staff to ensure development and delivery of community impact projects, as well as professional development and performance

Articulate vision and provide support, professional development and performance management

  • Oversee all temporary staff, including contractors and volunteers
  • Provide the Board with regular updates through formal Board meetings and outside of them, so that they are informed, engaged and able to make the best strategic decisions for the organisation
  • Maintain relationships with Board members, including but not exclusive to the Chair, Treasurer and General Secretary
  • Develop and deliver the annual staff review system

Network engagement

To maximize the opportunities presented by United Way membership, and ensure LCVS remains a local member

  • Maintain the relationship with LCVS, the United Way in Liverpool, providing the support and collateral they need from the United Way network to remain engaged and active
  • Work closely with the United Way Worldwide European team and other United Ways in the network to learn and share best practice​​

General:

  • To develop, implement and follow United Way UK’s policies and procedures.
  • To undertake any training necessary and participate in the organisation’s supervision and appraisal system, and identify further training and professional development needs.
  • The post holder is expected to be flexible in the performance of duties and to undertake any other duties identified as appropriate to the post.
