Maya Traditions Foundation

Overview
Headquarters:
Panajachel, Sololá, Guatemala
Annual Budget :
$100-500,000
Size:
1-10 employees
Founded:
1988
About Us
Mission:

To empower women artisans, their families, and their communities through Fair Trade and Social Programs that help to rescue, preserve, and promote their ancestral culture with a focus on backstrap weaving, thereby taking part in a larger positive social change for indigenous communities.

Programs:

Fair Trade Market Access Program

This program represents the bulk of our work here at Maya Traditions; connecting Guatemalan women artisans to international markets and ensuring their goods are being sold at a price point which will provide them with fair pay for their work.  This means marketing products online and at fair trade shows, establishing new retail partners, and constantly promoting Maya Traditions’ artisans’ work in everything that we do.

Youth Education Program

This Program offers economic support to school-aged children of the artisans we work with, and invests in the personal and professional development of students at the secondary level through workshops and community service initiatives. Through a holistic program, we strive to develop our students into successful, socially-conscious adults, empowering them to contribute positively to their communities and foster significant change in Guatemala.

Artisan Development Program

This program encompasses all of the supporting activities that FTM engages in to increase the quality of life for collaborating artisans and their families.  These activities include product development, quality control, and continuing education in the form of workshops on relevant themes such as leadership, basic business principles, management of finances, literacy, family planning, etc.

Ethical Tourism Program

Maya Traditions Foundation (MTF) connects travelers to immersive community tours, in the beautiful and culturally-rich Highlands of Western Guatemala.  Our longstanding relationships with partner communities and continuing commitment to the art of Fair Trade backstrap-woven textiles have uniquely positioned us to provide authentic cultural experiences to visitors: day tours on and around the stunning Lake Atitlan, backstrap- and basket-weaving classes, a Maya herbalism course.
