The Safe Sisters Circle is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free culturally specific, holistic, and
trauma-based services to Black women survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault
primarily living in Washington, DC's Wards 7 and 8.

TSSC is looking for a passionate individual who is committed to the work of advancing the legal
and mental health interests of Black women survivors of intimate partner abuse and sexual
assault. This person is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and implementation of
the new mental health program being launched. Knowledge or familiarity with mental health
services delivery, mental health advocacy, and mental health policy development is a key
requirement for this position. This is an ideal position for a seasoned clinician with a deep
understanding of providing trauma-based care seeking an opportunity to work in a small,
non-profit environment while making high organizational impacts. Qualified candidates must be
highly motivated, capable of self-direction, amenable to shared leadership and able to work
collaboratively in a teamwork capacity.


This is a NEW position, and thus applicants should be excited about co-creating and
independently building new procedures and infrastructure to support programmatic
growth.

This position reports directly to the Executive Director, and works closely with all members of the
TSSC team, including the Director of Legal Services.

While The Safe Sisters Circle (TSSC) is currently operating in a hybrid model, candidates are
expected to reside within commuting distance of our headquarters in Washington, DC.

Areas of Responsibility: 

This job description provides a general guideline to duties and responsibilities expected and
essential for this new position. It is not all inclusive and the actual position may vary as
circumstances indicate or as determined by the team.


● Work with the Executive Director to develop programming including setting the annual goals
for the mental health program.
● Develop any infrastructure and systems needed to ensure quality clinical services.
● Maintain accurate and complete records on all clients and services provided in compliance
with HIPPA regulations.
● As needed, provide direct client services which may include initial screening and needs
assessment, information and referral, crisis intervention, education and emotional support
and/or advocacy.

● Assist with in developing the organization’s mental health focused narrative and content for
inclusion in grant proposals, sponsorship requests, and other funding and resource
procurement opportunities that arise.
● Provide outreach on mental health program including management of referrals establishing
mutually beneficial working partnerships and programmatic relationships with
community-based organizations, service providers, and other key stakeholders such as
university-based mental health, public health, and social work programs.
● Coordinate the staffing of the mental health programming including hiring and supervision of
therapists, and regular team meetings.
● Assist Executive Director with the development and maintenance of program grants and
complete all monthly, quarterly and semi-annual reports for the mental health program.
● Assist with data collection and evaluation efforts as needed.

Educational Background: 
Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or other related social service disciplines. Certification and/or licensure in a relevant discipline.

● A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in social services, mental health, substance
abuse with a track record of providing integrated trauma-informed care.
● At least 3 years supervisory and management experience.
● Possess strong interpersonal skills and cultural competence, including communication ability
with a diverse population.
● Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and empowerment,
● Holds themselves self-accountable for making decisions, managing resources efficiently,
achieving and role modelling values.
● Approachable, good listener, easy to talk to; builds and maintains effective relationships with
colleagues, members and external partners and supporters.
● Honest, encourages openness and transparency, builds trust and confidence.
● Ability to analyze information, evaluate options and to think and plan strategically.
● Ability to work independently, interdependently, and collaboratively.
● High level of proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and facility with learning new
technological platforms and programs.


Preferred
● 5+ years of volunteer/working experience in the nonprofit field providing culturally-specific
and responsive services/programming targeted to Black women/Black communities.
● Knowledge and experience in public and mental health programming, advocacy, and policy
highly desired, with a particular focus on the mental health and wellness landscape for Black
women in America.
● Experience with successfully facilitating trainings, workshops, and circles (e.g., restorative
justice circles, wellness circles, grief circles, sister circles, etc...)

Compensation/Benefits: 

At TSSC we prioritize flexibility and work-life balance. This position is $75/hr, at 15
hours/week. While TSSC is currently operating in a hybrid model, candidates are expected to
available in person in Washington, D.C. a minimum of 5-7 hours/week.


As this is an independent contractor position, the organization does not provide employee
benefits (i.e. health insurance coverage, paid vacation or sick leave, retirement, paid family
leave, Social Security, Medicare, unemployment tax, or any other benefits). We are committed
