The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive officer, community leader, and relationship fundraiser of Your Safe Haven (YSH) and is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and performance of the organization. YSH seeks an Executive Director who can carry the organization’s mission forward, deepen community trust, and ensure strong, sustainable operations. 

The Executive Director is accountable for mission stewardship, program quality, staff leadership, financial and operational oversight, compliance, fundraising, and external relationships. This role blends the core duties of a traditional nonprofit ED with visible, community-facing leadership in the domestic violence, sexual assault, and other victimizations field. 

The Executive Director should bring direct professional experience in services for victims of interpersonal violence, ensuring leadership decisions are grounded in survivor-centered, trauma-informed, and legally compliant practice. 

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and leads the organization in partnership with the Board, staff leadership, volunteers, funders, and community partners. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Core Responsibilities 

Mission, Strategy & Executive Leadership  

  • Serve as the chief steward of YSH’s mission, values, and long-term vision. 

  • Lead implementation of Board-approved strategic priorities and organizational goals. 

  • Provide executive leadership that balances mission impact, organizational capacity, and sustainability. 

  • Ensure YSH remains a trusted, survivor-centered organization grounded in best practices in services for victims of crime, particularly DV/SA. 

  • Represent YSH as the organization’s chief spokesperson and public leader. 

Program & Impact Oversight 

  • Provide executive oversight of all programs and services, ensuring: 

  • survivor-centered, trauma-informed practice 

  • service quality, safety, and ethical integrity 

  • alignment with mission and community need 

  • Ensure programming reflects current best practices specific to crime victim advocacy, crisis response, and survivor confidentiality. 

  • Ensure programs comply with funder requirements, contracts, and applicable regulations. 

  • Oversee program evaluation, outcomes tracking, and continuous improvement. 

  • Ensure service models, staffing levels, and performance metrics align with capacity and funding. 

  • Maintain appropriate boundaries and independence in relationships with system and community partners. 

Staff Leadership, Management & Accountability 

  • Lead, supervise, and support the senior management team, including: 

  • Victim Services Manager 

  • CLR Attorney 

  • Director of Operations and Finance 

  • Establish clear expectations, performance goals, supervision routines, and accountability systems. 

  • Foster a healthy, professional, trauma-informed organizational culture. 

  • Address performance issues, conflict, or conduct concerns fairly, consistently, and promptly. 

  • Ensure appropriate staffing structures, professional development, and succession planning. 

Financial Oversight & Organizational Stewardship 

  • Serve as chief steward of YSH’s financial health and sustainability. 

  • Oversee budgeting, cash-flow management, and financial forecasting. 

  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to the Board. 

  • Monitor expenditures and revenue to ensure alignment with approved budgets and grant requirements.  

  • Partner with finance staff and external professionals (e.g., auditors, accountants) to ensure sound financial controls and clean audits. 

Grant Management, Compliance & Risk Management 

  • Provide executive oversight of grant and contract management, including: 

  • proposal development (in collaboration with staff and partners) 

  • compliance with grant terms and reporting requirements 

  • timely submission of reports and deliverables 

  • seek additional funding to support agency 

  • Ensure strong internal controls, documentation, and compliance with employment law, confidentiality requirements, and victim-services regulations. 

  • Oversee organizational risk management, including: 

  • safety and confidentiality protocols 

  • insurance coverage and liability exposure 

  • crisis response and continuity planning 

  • Recommend policies and risk-mitigation strategies to the Board as appropriate. 

Operations, Infrastructure & Policy Implementation 

  • Ensure effective day-to-day operations that support staff, protect survivors, and meet legal and funder requirements. 

  • Oversee operational systems including: 

  • policies and procedures 

  • technology and data security 

  • facilities and space planning 

  • vendor and outsourced service management 

  • Implement and uphold Board-approved policies, employee handbook, and procedures manual. 

  • Recommend policy updates or new policies to the Board as needed to support effective governance. 

Community Leadership, Fundraising & External Relations 

  • Serve as YSH’s chief ambassador and relationship builder in the community. 

  • Build and sustain strong relationships with: 

  • survivors and survivor-informed voices 

  • funders and donors 

  • community organizations and civic leaders 

  • law enforcement, courts, hospitals, and legal partners 

  • Serve as YSH’s chief relationship fundraiser, cultivating trust-based relationships that support long-term financial sustainability. 

  • Partner with the Board to strengthen a culture of philanthropy and engage board members in fundraising and ambassadorship. 

  • Ensure outreach and communications accurately reflect YSH’s mission, services, and impact. 

Board Partnership & Governance Support 

  • Work in close partnership with the Board of Directors while maintaining appropriate governance–management boundaries. 

  • Keep the Board well-informed through timely, accurate reporting and strategic dialogue. 

  • Support the Board in fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities. 

  • Provide leadership and context to inform Board decision-making. 

  • Contribute to strategic planning and long-term organizational sustainability.

Training & Professional Development 

To support cohesion and ensure all staff share a consistent survivor-centered approach: 

  • Complete required victim advocacy training consistent with organizational and funder standards (e.g., core DV/SA training requirements applicable to staff). 

  • Complete PCCD Foundational Academy training. 

  • Maintain working knowledge of confidentiality, privilege, mandatory reporting, and ethical boundaries applicable to victim services work. 

  • Participate in staff trainings and cross-training activities as assigned. 

Direct service coverage, if any, is limited and operationally supportive (e.g., assisting with coordination or internal support during emergencies) and does not replace the primary responsibilities of the role. 

Educational Background: 
Master's Degree
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications    

  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a nonprofit, human services, victim services, or related mission-driven organization. 

  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory and staff management experience, including performance evaluation and team development. 

  • Demonstrated experience managing organizational budgets and financial oversight responsibilities. 

  • Experience working with government-funded programs (e.g., VOCA, STOP, PCCD, PCADV, PCAR, or similar funding streams). 

  • Experience collaborating across multidisciplinary systems (law enforcement, courts, healthcare, social services, community partners). 

  • Demonstrated experience exercising independent judgment and executive-level decision-making. 

  • Experience working in domestic violence, sexual assault, or victim services environments. 

  • Experience presenting to and partnering with a Board of Directors. 

  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong community and funder relationships. 

  • Comfort serving as a visible public leader and relationship-based fundraiser. 

 

Preferred 

  • Experience working in rural or resource-constrained communities. 

  • Experience partnering with justice-system and legal stakeholders while maintaining advocacy independence. 

  • Experience leading organizations through growth following stabilization 

Compensation/Benefits: 

Annual Salary: $80,000- 87,500

Work Environment 

This position includes primarily office-based work with occasional evening hours for board meetings or organizational priorities.

Your Safe Haven, Inc. serves as the designated Crime Victim Resource Center for Bedford County, offering compassionate, comprehensive support to individuals impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault and other serious crimes.

Programs: 

Our services include counseling, assistance with filing Protection from Abuse (PFA) orders, and advocacy and accompaniment in civil, criminal, medical, and law enforcement settings. We also provide safety and goal planning, information and referrals, and a variety of other supportive services.  For those in immediate danger, emergency shelter is available to ensure safety and stability during crisis situations.

In addition to direct services, Your Safe Haven, Inc. is deeply committed to prevention and community education. We work throughout Bedford County to raise awareness, promote violence prevention, and inform children and adults about critical issues as well as the services we provide. These outreach efforts take place in schools, community agencies, businesses, churches, and other local settings.
