About Us

Founded in 2024, Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE) is a national organization committed to advancing justice and equity for transgender and non-binary people through impact litigation, direct legal services, advocacy, and public education. Born from a merger of NCTE and TLDEF, A4TE’s Legal Programs Department currently includes the Impact Litigation Project, Name Change Project, and Trans Health Project. A4TE has sued counties in New York and Florida for violence against trans people in jails. We’ve won federal lawsuits in Georgia and North Carolina seeking the removal of transgender-related exclusions in employee health care plans. We are actively partnering with grassroots leaders and organizations in Texas and other states to push back against the attacks on transgender young people. Last year alone, we assisted over 500 low-income trans people in name changes. And we’re just getting started.

Position Overview

Reports to: Senior Name Change Project Coordinator
Type: Internship

This is an opportunity to play a role in our nation’s movement for transgender rights and gain exposure to the legal landscape for name changes and identity document updates. The Name Change Project Resource Intern will conduct research and develop resources to support transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary applicants with their legal name changes and identity document updates. The Intern may also be asked to perform research or other tasks to support the name change projects as is needed and of interest.

The summer internship is a ten-week, full-time position. Work hours will be agreed upon in advance and will generally be between 9:00am and 6:00pm Eastern. The internship is remote, and the intern may work from any location.
