Position summary:  

The Director of Marketing and Communication will play a vital role in this transformative moment for the Playwrights’ Center, telling the story of this dynamic 47-year-old institution and the artists it serves. Working with senior leadership, the  Director of Marketing and Communication manages the Center’s brand and messaging, develops and executes the annual communications plan, and leads the creation of a full range of print and digital materials to promote the Center and its artists.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Duties and responsibilities:

Content development, design, and production:

  • Plan, write, edit, and oversee (and participate in) design, production, and distribution of:

    • Print materials (season booklet, event collateral, promotional pieces for the organization, etc.)

    • Donor materials, in collaboration with the development directors

    • Digital communications (newsletter, event emails, website, etc.)

    • Social media content

    • Editorial content

    • Video, audio, and other multimedia content

  • Manage part-time communications coordinator/designer, as well as freelance designers, developers, photographers, and writers.

  • Oversee the design and continuous improvement of the Center’s website.

Branding, Messaging, public relations, media relations, and advertising:

  • Shape and drive the Center’s voice messaging, in collaboration with the senior leadership team.

  • Manage and grow the Playwrights’ Center brand, increasing visibility and engagement locally, nationally, and internationally.

  • Plan, execute, and evaluate advertising and PR strategies for the Center.

  • Write and distribute press releases, pitch stories to the media, maintain press kit, and track media relations efforts.

Promotion of Artistic programs:

  • Promote Playwrights’ Center Core Writers and fellows nationally and locally.

  • Market fellowships to attract more applicants and more diverse applicants.

  • Support director of membership programs and education coordinator in recruiting, retaining, and communicating with members.

  • Attract audiences to the Center’s public events.

Administration:

  • Provide tools and templates to staff and board to help them tell the story of the Playwrights’ Center and remain in brand.

  • Develop and manage the communications budget with support from the managing director.

  • Manage and grow constituent lists (email subscribers, media contacts, etc.) in collaboration with other staff.

  • Create and manage the annual communications plan and calendar.

Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications and experience:

  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written

  • 3+ years experience in communications/marketing, preferably in nonprofit and/or arts sector

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Bachelors degree in marketing, communications, theater, or related field or comparable practical experience

  • Experience designing printed and electronic material

  • Knowledge of and experience with social media platforms

  • Experience with basic web design and content creation (Drupal experience a plus)

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and digital content distribution systems (mailchimp, constant contact, etc)

Compensation/Benefits: 

The communications director is a full-time position based in Minneapolis. The salary range is in the mid 50s. Benefits include health insurance; generous paid time off for holidays, vacations, and sick days; and an optional IRA plan.

Programs and services

The Core Writer Program gives 25-30 of the most exciting playwrights from across the country the time and tools to develop new work for the stage. All Core Writers receive play development workshops at the Center, in collaboration with prominent directors, actors, dramaturgs, and designers. Selected work by Core Writers makes up our formal season of public readings: the PlayLabs festival and the Ruth Easton New Play Series. Core Writers are also promoted by the Center and provided opportunities through an extensive network of colleges and universities, cultural institutions, and producing theaters.

Fellowships, made possible by the McKnight and Jerome foundations, provide more than $315,000 each year for residencies, commissions, and development funds. Through these fellowships, the Playwrights’ Center functions as a home for:

  • Jerome Fellows, four emerging American playwrights
  • Many Voices Fellows, two early-career playwrights of color, one Minnesota-based 
  • Many Voices Mentees, two Minnesota-based beginning playwrights of color
  • McKnight Fellows in Playwriting, two accomplished Minnesota-based playwrights
  • McKnight National Residency and Commission, one playwright selected annually from an impressive national pool
  • McKnight Theater Artist Fellows, three exceptional Minnesota-based theater artists (other than playwrights)

Membership is open to all and provides nearly 2,000 playwrights worldwide with tools, resources, and support. Benefits include a database of playwriting opportunities, online and in-person seminars and classes, access to readings with professional actors, dramaturgical services, and more. In addition, the Playwrights’ Center’s New Plays on Campus program serves dozens of colleges and universities nationwide, providing script-matching services, arranging playwright residencies, and offering immersive apprenticeships to student playwrights. 

Local and national partnerships elevate the role of living playwrights. The Center works with several theaters each year to develop work for their stages. Recent collaborations include partnerships with Denver Center on Idris Goodwin’s Victory Jones and the Incredible One Woman Band, Marin Theatre Company on Carson Kreitzer’s Lasso of Truth, Mixed Blood on Aditi Kapil’s Brahman(i) and Shiv, Pillsbury House Theatre on Tracey Scott Wilson’s Buzzer, and The Walker Art Center and Elevator Repair Service on Sibyl Kempson’s Fondly, Collette Richland. The Center also flies in 10-15 artistic leaders each year to meet writers and hear their work. The newly-launched Regulars program brings together a group of nearly 100 producing theaters in the United States who seek the support of the Center in order to meet new writers, develop their work, and move them into production.
