The YMCA of Yonkers, New York Board of Directors is looking for a compelling leader who can build strong relationships in the communities served. Actively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, staff and volunteers. Be respected as a leader within the community while always upholding the highest standards and values of the YMCA.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Board Expectations: The Y board seeks an experienced leader who has the requisite background and skills to achieve excellence in the following areas:

  • Advocate the Vision of the YMCA and be the Heart and Soul of the Operation: Should actively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, staff and volunteers and be seen as an active and integral member of the community. Serve as an ambassador for the mission, cause and vision for the YMCA within the community and be seen and respected as a leader, with the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, while always upholding the highest standards of the values of the YMCA’s heritage.
  • Establish and Implement a Strategic Plan and be the Leader for that Vision: Lead the organization in an effort that rallies all the Y’s stakeholders around a clear vision and strategic plan. Must be able to articulate a compelling vision for what the Y is and will become. Working with the volunteer board and staff, the CEO needs to establish and implement a vision and plan that excites staff, board, members and the community around the difference the Y makes for people and the impact the Y will have in the community.
  • Continue to Strengthen and Develop Staff Team: Serve as a leader focused on motivating and engaging staff in a positive and productive manner. Lead by example; remain actively engaged in staff supervision, development and performance leading to superior results in programs, member development/satisfaction and community engagement. Maintain a culture of integrity, high ethical standards, and values.
  • Continue Strengthening Operating Performance with a Focus on Fiscal Health: Assess the current operation and business model and create a plan that will continue to grow and retain membership as well as expand programs in response to community needs. Demonstrate success in the ability to understand fiscal opportunities, challenges and complexities and ensure the Y grows in its financial capacity. Successfully create and achieve plans, with measurable short and long-term goals.
  • Lead Fundraising Efforts:Serve as the leader in fundraising efforts by working with the board to establish a plan for how the Y will increase unrestricted funds and contributions through effective fundraising for operations and providing financial assistance as well as capital dollars for facility maintenance and capital renovations. Ensure public and private partnerships and resources are developed to support operational and future needs by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors.
  • Develop and Partner with an Effective and Diverse Volunteer Board: Continue strengthening the board and diversifying its membership by establishing an effective governance strategy utilizing best-practices to determine needs, recruitment efforts, training, engagement and evaluation. Develop a collaborative, productive relationship with the board that fully leverages its capabilities, including professional/managerial expertise, community relationships and financial resources.
Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree (required/non-negotiable).
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization.
  • Fiscally sound business management approach and a proven track record of fiscal management for a complex organization in excess of $1M annually.
  • To be actively engaged in community events, which will require evening and weekend commitments.
  • Proven experience leading an organization with a strong commitment to diversity, inclusion and cultural competency.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  • Successful fundraising experience including grant writing, annual and capital campaigns.
  • Proven ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered and the effectiveness in broadening engagement in the communities served.
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership skills and communication skills (both written and verbal). Candidate should also embody personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.

Preferred Candidate Criteria:

  • Bi-lingual (English & Spanish).
  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (candidates will have three years to complete certification requirements).
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range: $100,000-$120,000 (Salary is commensurate with experience).

Benefits: Healthcare plan and vacation, as well as other benefits per the personnel policy. Retirement: 5% YMCA contribution; 3% Employee contribution for a total of 8% (per eligibility requirements). CEO can contribute to his/her retirement from date-of-hire into the YMCA 403(b) Smart Account. (www.yretirement.org). Health Insurance-YMCA contributes 75% and employee contributes 25% of the cost.
